8th Annual Evening Of Pink

Most guests donned at least a touch of pink, in various hues, for last night’s fundraiser at the Civic Centre

Prince George, BC – Approximately 450 people gathered for the 8th Evening of Pink at the Prince George Civic Centre last night…

Organizer, Monica Peacock, says her volunteer team of 33 worked hard, "And I’m sure happy with the overall result."  The loss of a young mother, 34-year-old Marianna, to breast cancer eight years ago is what inspired Peacock to begin her ‘evening’ fundraisers.

She says she remains invested and involved because it’s her mission to raise awareness about the ‘monster’ of cancer.  "Awareness is the most incredible tool that we have to offer everyone," she says.  "Whether it’s your daughter, your son, your mother, your father, your co-worker, you friend, your neighbour – that whole sphere – the more enlightened they are, the more opportunity they have to catch the cancers that we have in our lives."

The guest speaker at last night’s event was Dr. Wendie-Lou denBrok, a medical student at UBC in her 4th year of residency who was diagnosed with triple-negative breast cancer on the day she was accepted into medical school.  The cancer was deemed to be in a palliative state with very low chance of survival.  With all the research at UBC, her oncologist was able to hit on the right combination of chemotherapy and it was very successful.  denBrok’s goal is to special in oncology.
