CNC Welcomes More International Students, but Overall Numbers are Down

Friday, September 28, 2012 @ 3:10 PM

Prince George, B.C.- The College of New Caledonia is reporting a drop in overall enrolment this year.  Overall  enrolment is down 7.5% this year,  with 2,208 full time equivalent students. That’s down from the 2,387 who were  enrolled last year.

“There are several contributing factors"says Catherine Wishart, Vice-President of Community and Student Services "such as the improved regional economy and record high employment levels in the Prince George area. The decline in high school enrolments in the area also played a role.”

There is some good news though, as CNC is  celebrating a record number of  international students.  With 296 international students enrolled  this September, that’s an increase of 16.5% over  the numbers enrolled in September of 2011.

“One of the best things about the increase in international students is the benefits it is having on domestic students,” says Wishart. “For example, CNC offered 18 sections of university transfer courses in the spring, which were completely funded by international students and fortunately 178 seats were also made available for domestic students. Without the international students, we simply could not afford that many intersession courses.”
