Prince George, B.C. – George Street in downtown Prince George was a fun place to be on Saturday.
Not only were there the weekly Farmer’s Market and accompanying street musicians on hand, there was also a display of brute strength all in the name of raising funds for a worthwhile cause.
It was the United Way’s Prince George fire truck pull, in which teams of ten members each grabbed on to a big chunk of rope and pulled a 31-thousand pound city fire truck over a regulated distance for awards and bragging rights.
Each team had to collect a minimum $250 in pledges in order to get into the event. In the end, five teams competed: The Bankf of Nova Scotia, Integris Credit Union, McElhaney Engineering, Intersect and the Prince George Fire Department.
All of the teams got to attempts in the timed event, with UNBC President George Iwama running the stop watch at the finish line. The fastest combined time went to…….well it doesn’t really matter. What does count is that it was a great kick-off to this year’s United Way campaign, with many many more “interesting” events to come through the winter.
