A Great Fall Day in Prince George

Sunday, September 30, 2012 @ 5:42 AM
Prince George, B.C. – In amongst the stories of murder and mayhem, crime and corruption, and dealing with those who insist on taking instead of giving, it’s great to have an assignment that offers a basket full of positives and fresh air.

The assignment: get out and see what’s happening in Prince George on a fall day. Best place to start would be in the morning, when the sun hasn’t come up yet but its reflective rays can be seen on the underside of the clouds floating overhead.
Not a bad way to start the day.

Then again, a drive along a quiet city street provides the clear evidence that fall is here, the nights are getting cooler, and the colourful growth of spring and summer is coming to the end of its life cycle in a dazzling display of yellows and browns and oranges. A reminder that not too far in the distance is the stark reality of winter. Downhill and cross country skiers, along with “sledders”, are busy making sure their gear is in order.

But we’re not there yet, back to this blaze of glory known as fall. Time to take a peek at Cottonwood Island Park and  everything it has to offer, including the sunshine casting shadows on a superbly-built and esthetically pleasing bridge that is fun to cross no matter what the season.

In trying to figure out what shot to use in wrapping up this little ditty about a pleasant autumn day in Prince George, I went over the phtos taken during the course of the day.  There were plenty of shots of the fire truck pull down on George Street.  There were some of the Farmer’s Market in the same area.  There were shots of the Mayor and MLA Bond doing their civic duty at events taking place around town.  And there were many attempts at getting the "perfect" photograph of nature at its best.

But for some unexpected and unexplained reason my mind went to the story the other  day of Dan and Sarah Hamhuis taking one hundred thousand dollars out of their bank account and giving it to Ronald McDonald House.
Giving instead of taking.

And that brought me to a chat a lady had with an audience at a museum in which she thanked the people who turned out for the dedication of a terrace in the name of her son who liked trains, and people. And the feeling was, ya, that’s a good way to sign off a story about a fall day in Prince George.  Thanks Mrs. Holzworth.
