Prince George, B.C. – That old adage penalties will kill you fit like a glove for the Prince George Spruce Kings in Merritt Saturday night.
The Kings ran into second period penalty problems in dropping a 6-2 decision to the Centennials. Prince George took 7 of the 9 minor penalties handed out by referee Nick Swaine. Merritt took the first minor in the opening frame and the last penalty of the game in the third period. The Spruce Kings had the other seven minors sandwiched in between, and it cost them dearly as the Centennials scored three times on the power play in the middle stanza to blow the contest wide open.
The teams were tied at 1 after one period, with Sean Landrey notching the Prince George goal, an unassisted tally, at 9:30 of that first period. Jake Lebrun scored his first BC Hockey League goal at 3:35 of the second to put the Kings up 2-1. Then all hell broke loose with Merritt scoring four in a row, three consecutive on the power play, to put the Cents up 5-2 after two. Sebastien Pare scored the only goal of the third, unassisted at 11:41, to hand the Kings their first regulation loss of the season.
Kirk Thompson and Liam McLeod shared the netminding duties for Prince George, McLeod coming in after the fifth Merritt goal. Tyler Steel picked up the victory for the Centennials.
So the Spruce Kings are now 4-1-1 and 1, good for 10 points and a first place tie with Coquitlam in the Mainland Division. Coquitlam beat Victoria 3-2 Saturday. Surrey holds down third place in the division with 8 points.
Sunday action has the Spruce Kings in Penticton for a 5pm start, while Coquitlam visits Nanaimo and Surrey plays host to Chilliwack.
