Prince George, B.C. – Over 400 Prince George and area residents turned out Sunday for the annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure.
The local participants joined 170-thousand people from 58 other Canadian communities who took part in the event that raises awareness and funds for breast cancer research, education and awareness programs. They walked and ran the 1 or 5 km distances in a light rain that failed to dampen the spirits of those taking part or the organizers and volunteers who put
more than 1500 hours into getting the Prince George event off the ground.
Of course pink is the order of the day at the CIBC Run for the Cure. The majority of people involved in the run displayed pink in one form or another. There were plenty of pink T-shirts, along with pink boas, laces, runners, one lady with blazing hot pink hair, and there were even some butterflydogs sporting bright pink wings! (in photo to right)
However, breast cancer remains the most common form of cancer diagnosed in Canadian women. One in nine Canadian women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. In 2012, an estimated 22,700 women in this country will be diagnosed with
breast cancer, and an estimated 5,100 will die from it. And the day was about those who have been claimed by breast cancer, and those who have survived it. And a very poignant moment came at the close of today’s run with the Parade of Survivors (shown in photo to the left).
Volunteer Run Directors Shari MacLellan and Renee McCloskey acknowledged the determination of those who have survived the battle, and urged those on hand to continue working towards a cure so that no one else will fall prey to the insidious disease.
They also announced that the 475 people who took part in this year’s Run raised $84,335.07 for the fight against breast cancer.
