I wonder what sort of baggage the cartoonist had in mind; pity he didn’t label those suitcases. Perhaps he was thinking of the fact that Khadr was only 15 years old when the events took place that landed him in detention. In Canada, the maximum sentence for a minor is 7 years of prison with the remainder served in the community. Or perhaps that he was labeled a “terrorist” as opposed to an enemy combatant, which would have made more sense, or maybe the fact that he was shot in the back? It could refer to ten years of imprisonment, often in solitary confinement and subject to interogation methods shunned by most of the civilzed world. Yes, I imagine Omar has a lot of baggage; too bad the Canadian and American governments packed his bags for him.

So a 15 yo kid that spent his earlier formative years in CANADA, is dragged over to his father’s homeland, ends up mixed in with Taliban insurgents that get caught in a fire fight with UN troops, is one of the few survivors. In order to justify arresting him, he is accused of tossing a single hand grenade that killed some peace keeper soldiers.
That makes him a murderer?
First off, if he did indeed toss the grenade, it was a combat action.
Second, combat actions are not usually chargeable offenses unless there is acts of inhumanity.
Third, he was dragged over there upon his father’s discretion, not his. HE WAS A 15 YEAR OLD KID!
Now, after 10 years in one of the most notorious US military prisons (remember he was/is a Canadian citizen), we have a 25 year old young man with no job skills, and no hope of ever gaining a decent Canadian life due to that “baggage”.
There you sit in your cozy, safe chair, flinging horrible names at him?
As krusty has noted, his time has been served for those bogus charges. Let him get on with his life, such as it is.

A combat action? Are you serious? What nation was he fighting for? What army did he belong too? He may have been brainwashed by his terrorist father but he still has to pay for his crimes.

Krusty and Loki both hit the nail on the head. If Omar had been killed by an American, Canadian or other soldier, that soldier would’ve been referred to as someone taking out the enemy, not a war criminal.
Omar probably had weapons at his disposal during this fight, but so did those shooting at him.
Is there only one side in a war that has the right to kill opposing soldiers?
No crimes have been committed by Omar, by others, definitely.

OMG.. he killed someone. he should pay for it the rest of his life in detention at the very least. Kid or no kid at the time, make the punishment fit the crime!

Well I guess Dragonmaster is a legal expert, and a military expert. So killing someone isn’t a crime to you DM?

sportsman, do we do the same to everyone that has killed someone in war? No we don’t. We do the same to actual murderers though. Killing someone in war is not known as murder unless it is actually murder. You may want to read up on it.
RUEZ do you know the meaning of war? People die in war RUEZ. Those that kill them are not usually known as criminals, they are known as combatants. On this planet they are legal killers. What do you call them on yours?
Are you saying anyone that kills someone in war is a criminal? Yes that is what you are saying.
Sorry you’re both wrong.

Omar was defending himself against other people with weapons that were trying to kill him and you call him a criminal?
Completely ludicrous!

I asked an insurance company rep if I could take a life insurance policy out on Omar. He said I could only do it if he was kin. No way I’m adopting that brat.

I was not in places where Omar was but I can’t understand what the US military is doing. Were there not military people killed on both sides of the war in Afganistan? Why did the US military use tactics outlawed by the Geneva Convention. The world humanity has suffered an injustice as a result of this injustice.

I don’t care if he’s 15, 12, or 53. He’s a murderer. He wasn’t a soldier fighting for his country, he was a terrorist. Even if he was brainwashed by his family he has to pay for his crimes. The only sympathy I have for him and his comrades is that they were held for so long without a trial. That is wrong. He’s squandered his Canadian citizenship. I only wish it were possible to ship him back to Afghanistan to enjoy the country he claims as home.

Dragonmaster, you might want to look up the definition of an unlawful combatant. I’ll give you a hand. That is a civilian that directly engages in an armed conflict in violation of the law. Also by the U.N.’s own definition, Omar was 15 and was not a child soldier.

He was fighting for what he believed in ruez just like you would in the US invaded. In world war 2 the French underground were called freedom fighters. Maybe he was a freedom fighter. Sounds like good ole Uncle Sam used unethical torchering techniques that would make anyone admit to anything ruez even you. So did he really kill someone or is it someone the US found alive and had no one else to blame.

Yup, if you are a soldier and you kill someone in a battle during a war you are a hero but if the guy you were trying to kill kills you he is a terrorist murderer.
I suppose if the one killed is on your side, then a hero died. If the one doing the killing is on your side then a terrorist murderer died.
Who gets to say who is the terrorist murderer and who is the hero RUEZ?

I am not sure why Omar Khadr’s family have decided to continue living in Canada, they won’t have a normal life in this country for the rest of their life and hey will be under scrutiny by the media and government.
