Cariboo Pulp Has New Deal

Quesnel, B.C.- The 220 or so members of CEP 1115 at West Fraser’s Cariboo Pulp and Paper mill have a new contract offer. The ratification vote will be held tomorrow, and the union executive is recommending acceptance.
The wage increase is the same as had been negotiated with CEP at Canfor in Prince George, with a lump sum payment of $3750 in each of the first two years of the contract, then a 2% boost in 2014, 2.5% hike in 2015 and a 3% increase in 2016.
Cariboo Pulp also negotiated a compressed work week, which will see its members work four 9 hour shifts, an 8 hour shift on Friday, then the next week, 4×9 hour shifts and Friday off.
If ratified, that means two companies will have now approved the packaged, the agreement would then become a “blanket” contract for other mills in the province.

Kinda strange shift schedule. Don’t these places usually work 4 twelves?
Anybody know how quickly the first cash payment goes out to the members? My local will be one of the next ones voting on the pattern agreement and I’m just trying to get an idea on how quickly we may get paid, if our agreement goes through, following the pattern.
I’d rather see them on 9 & 8 hour shifts than 12. It must get awfully tiring near the end of 12 – leaving more opportunity for injuries.
There are 12 hour shifts and 8 hour shifts currently. It depends on the job/function. Most production employees work 12 hours and most maintenance employees and support staff work 8 hour shifts.
Sign me up. I think I’d like to go back to 8 hr shifts for a while….
