Prince George, B.C- Unemployed older workers in B.C. will see an extension of the program to help them improve their skills to re-enter the workforce.
Prince George -Peace River M.P. Bob Zimmer will be outlining the details for Prince George at a news conference slated for later this morning.
B.C. and the Federal Government have extended the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers (TIOW) to the end of March 2014.
The extension will see the two senior levels of government invest a further $6.5 million to support older workers living in smaller communities.
Since the TIOW agreement was initially signed in 2007 more than 4,000 individuals living in B.C. have been given the opportunity to take part in TIOW projects to develop their employability skills and take advantage of work experience opportunities.
"By working with the federal government on programs like the Targeted Initiative for Older Workers we are leveraging an important resource in our economy – older workers," said Minister of Jobs Tourism and Skills Development, Pat Bell. "Using labour market programs like these and others under the Canada-BC Labour Market Agreement help British Columbia capitalize on the human resources we already have in this province so we get the right people the right skills to fill the over one million jobs we expect in BC by 2020."

Money well spent. Education is the great equalizer in society and access to education is critical to a well balanced society that takes care of its own.
Of all the advanced countries in the OECD Canada is dead last when it comes to citizens with a university degree or college diploma who had parents who did not have a university degree or college diploma. Last place… and furthermore BC is last place in Canada… dead last. If your parents were not educated, than in BC you are more likely than anywhere else in the OECD group of nations to not get an education yourself.
That is the legacy BC has for its youth generations. One of haves and have nots to the exclusivity of opportunity through education.
