Province Kicks In Dollars for China Trip

Friday, October 19, 2012 @ 12:44 PM
Prince George, B.C.- The Province of B.C. is kicking in $10 thousand dollars to help cover the costs of the upcoming trip to China by Prince George Mayor Shari Green and two Councillors and the Acting City Manager.

Minister of Jobs, Tourism and Skills Development, Pat Bell, made news of the donation public this morning at the event which announced the Province’s purchase of the Victoria Towers for a subsidized housing project.

Minister Bell says he approached the Mayor with the offer of the money, as he is not able to make his annual trade mission trip to China this fall as his team prepares for next May’s election.

Bell also says Provincial Government staff will work with the City delegation to set appointments and assist them in the trip that is scheduled for November.

The funding for the trip is relying on about $12 thousand left from the initial “twinning” grant that was given to the City two years ago, this new $10 thousand dollars in funding and the rest will be covered with money from the Council’s “development fund” which has a balance of about $25 thousand dollars.

Picturing the Minister kicking the money in versus nicely handing it to the City with a handshake and a :-)

does anyone recall how many times a delegation from CHINA has come to Prince George?

Giving this money to the City doesnt make any bloody difference. Its still tax dollars, and I still say that Municipalities have no business on the World Stage. Thats why we have Federal and Provincial Governments.

Lets get some time and effort from the City to solve our debt and infrastructure problems.

Leave the big crosses to the big hosses and the little crosses to the little hosses.

Oh. How sad. The provincial ministers are going to have to miss their annual China vacation. Glad to see them hand the money over to the City for their worthless trip to China. Would hate to have seen these tax dollars go towards something worthwhile.

It’s all been said. For me, this has been the dealbreaking decision and the majority of these clowns will not be re-elected if my wish is my command.

I have read the “BC Asia Twinning Toolkit” too, Stolz and Green and I still don’t buy what you two are selln’. it speaks of the importance of community buy-in, a diverse delegation and travel only if it is affordable. It also shares that there are no guarantees and that twinning is not for every community.

I’ll give you this; if times were better I’d say knock yourselves out. It would be great for our Mayor to trot of to the UBCM and be one of the cool kids. But we can’t be broke and flush at the same time. You cannot pull one card to suit your argument and the other to quell one. It has really gotten old in a short amount of time.

Mz. Green, your argument that we just have to as this ‘opportunity’ will bring untold riches, no matter that our city is falling apart, your staff morale is at an all-time low, the citizens are confused and feeling bamboozled, people are pitted against each other and folks are scared for our hard won basic amenities like our public pool and parks, people fear for their jobs and non profits have taken yet another kick in the scrotum….BUT, we just can’t not go to China!!!

Mayor Green, IMO you are the worst leader this city has ever had and what a travesty of a legacy for you.

Stolz, there is no business case for this whatsoever & it does not cut it on many levels. It would be a cool thing and really neato if your city was not falling down around your ears.

Quit the b.s.

You both started out preaching of a crisis that did not exist and voila! Now you have one. Nice job you two. Everyone else on Council, wake the hell up. Only my opinion, of course:)

Very well put bc north. This stuff really goes to their heads. Now their famous.lol.

Glad to read the mayor and delegation will have an extra 10 grand to waste. Hate to see them have to struggle on just 37 grand of taxpayer money.
Just a few more pot holes that won’t get repaired next year because of lack of funds.
