PG’s 2012 Citizen Of The Year
Prince George, BC – Tickled pink…
Monica Peacock is the city’s 2012 Citizen of the Year. Peacock is, perhaps, best known for organizing the annual ‘Evening of Pink’ fundraiser, which raises breast cancer awareness and funds for the Spirit of the North Healthcare Foundation. As of last month’s 7th annual gala, Peacock has raised a total of $130-thousand dollars for the foundation.
Nominations Committee Co-Chair, Murry Krause, points out that Peacock doesn’t take the rest of the fall off – she moves on to the Festival of Trees where she helps to decorate and organize the Jingle Bell dance. The money raised there also goes to the Spirit of the North to purchase expensive, but much-needed medical equipment at the University Hospital of Northern BC.
In addition, the local florist donates roses for the Relay of Life effort and contributes about $250 per month in silent auction items and other contributions to various organizations, including the Prince George Community Foundation.
Peacock was honoured this evening at the Community Foundation’s Citizen of the Year banquet at the Coast Inn of the North. This year’s nominees included Bob D’Aury, Kathy Nadalin, and Ron & Dee Neukomm.

Haha fantastic! Well deserved ! Finally some good news !
Such a diaappointment…Neukomm’s are so deserving for all they both have given to Prince George. I know question the credibility of the Community Foundation.
We have to remember that in virtually all such awards, there are biases.
Each individual has their own way of giving to the community. Some give under different circumstances which might include monetary incentives while others give without such incentives.
Trying to pick a single person under such circumstances is like trying to pick a single person to receive a Nobel Prize or an Oscar.
In my view, a credible recognition/honouring program ought to have a variety of categories.
We also have to remember one other thing. The title of the honour, based on the Foundation’s web site information, is not “Prince George Citizen of the Year”.
The title is “Citizen of the Year” as conducted by the Prince George Community Foundation.
So, one might properly extend that to “The Prince George Community Foundation’s Citizen of the Year Award”.
I think any other organization, such as the Community Arts Council of Prince George & District, could run an annual event to recognize their Citizen of the Year based on criteria they set.
I do not concern myself about awards. It is nice to see people nominated and actually allowing their names to stand. That in itself is recognition already. Just think of the many others who have not been nominated yet do a lot to enhance not only their special interest groups, but thereby the entire community.
This community, I understand, is one of the most blessed in the province with the amount of volunteerism. Let’s give ourself an award for that if that is the expected thing to do.
It makes one wonder why we need all these volenteers. It is just great to give and most enjoy that oppertunity.
But why do we have all these organizations in our society to enhance our community. Is someone like our government not stepping up to the plate to fullfil these needs
We have many many organizations in our community to provide needs for those who are not as fortunate to enjoy a good life style because the government fails to assist those in need and its just not money they need. They also need moral and and a social network for support
cheers
Congratulations to Ms. Peacock. Any of the candidates would have made a good choice!
Hurray! It’s about time Monica was recognized for all the hard and wonderful work she has done in our community. Gus – if as you say you “don’t concern yourself about awards” then why did you have to say anything at all? And Retired 02, what a whiner. Couldn’t both of you found another post to spread your negativism and leave Monica to enjoy her well earned recognition?
Way to go Monica, we love you!!
Congrats to all of the nominees, as Gus says, it is an honour right there.
ibear I suggest you look at the volunteer work that both the Neukomm’s have done before you go making Monica out to be a hero. Bob D”aury has also done a lot volunteer work.
