Spruce Kings Make It Five Straight

Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings rode the hot goaltending of rookie Liam McLeod to a 6-3 victory over the Alberni Valley Bulldogs at the Coliseum Friday night.

McLeod blocked 34 of 37 shots in recording the first win of his BCHL career. Alberni outshot Prince George 37-36.

The Spruce Kings jumped out to a 1-0 lead on a goal by Bryant Christian at 2:34 of the opening period. Alberni tied it less than a minute later when Jared Wilson scored at 3:24. But a power play marker at 18:05, which was originally credited to   Cam Lawson but later given to Shayne Morrissey, sent the home club into the dressing room with a 2-1 lead after one.

The Spruce Kings scored the only goal of the middle stanza when Morrissey converted a loose puck at the side of the net at 2:23. Kings up 3-1 after two. And it looked like the Spruce Kings were well on their way to victory when they went up 4-1 at 2:23 of the third on a Tyson Witala goal.   But the visitors still had some fight left, scoring a power play goal at 6:13 and an even strength tally at 9:05 to make it 4-3 Prince George.

The Bulldogs had all the play going their way for an 8-minute span of that third frame but solid goaltending by McLeod kept them from getting the equalizer. Then Coltyn Hansen did them in, scoring an unassisted goal at 12:33 before popping in the empty netter at 19:09 to wrap up the scoring.

Prince George took 8 minor penalties while the visitors were assessed three, with each team scoring once with the man advantage.

The victory gives the Kings 22 points. They remain tied for top spot in the Mainland Division with Chilliwack, who beat Coquitlam 4-1. Surrey knocked off Langley 5-3 to move even with Coquitlam at 17 points. Langley remains at 14.

The Kings, with a five-game win streak,  host West Kelowna at 7pm Saturday. Kelowna fell 4-1 to league-leading Penticton, which now has 27 points on the season.
