Cariboo Cats Win in Nanaimo
Prince George, B.C. — Tyler Povelofskie made good on a third period penalty shot which stood up as the game winner as the Cariboo Cougars downed the North Island Silvertips 4-2 in Nanaimo Saturday.
The Cats badly outshot the Silvertips as North Island goalie Liam Young kept his team in the game during a barrage of first period shots.
Liam Blackburn scored his eighth of the season in the sixth minute of the first from Brad Morrison and Braiden Epp to give the Cougars the early lead. Stephen Penner pounced on a rebound in the second after Blackburn rang one off the post to put the Cats up 2-0 heading into the final frame.
Povelofskie’s penalty shot made it 3-0 before the Tips got two quick ones including a deflection off of Penner to make it a one goal game with 13 minutes to go.
Riley Pettitt then scored his second of the season from Michael Bell and Tre Potskin to give the Cats some breathing room as the visitors earned their third straight win and improved their record to a BCMML best 9-2. Morrison and Blackburn both finished the game with two points.
Nathan Warren earned his sixth win of the season in net for the Cats who will likely turn to Jeremy Matte for Sunday’s rematch.
Puckdrop is 10:30am at the Nanaimo Ice Centre.
