Prince George, B.C.- It has been years in the making, and later this morning, the Northern Cancer Centre will officially open.
As 250News first reported last Friday, Premier Christy Clark will join local MLAs, B.C. Cancer Authority and Northern Health officials in officially opening the $102 million dollar facility later this morning.
The new Cancer Centre is part of a Northern Cancer Control strategy, and will offer a variety of treatments including radiation therapy.
The Northern Cancer Centre will be opening its doors from 3 – 7 pm today so the public can tour the new facility.

Unfortunately, lack of oncologists.
Great to have this Cancer clinic, it’s long overdue and is badly needed…but it loses something when desperate politicians like Clark,Bell,Rustad, and probably Bond etc.have to turn it into a campain show.
Oh well…Clark does love a good photo op…even if no one wants to look at her anymore!
They will take all the credit for the clinic and tell us wonderful things about the B.C.Liberals!
We will all be so impressed,I’m sure!

Just so there is no confusion, the Liberals are entitled to take full credit for this clinic as had it not been for former Premier Gordon Campbell insisting that it be built, it would not have come to fruition. While there may be a case for Liberal bashing on a number of issues, this is not one of them.

The clinic will provide a variety of treatments including radiation therapy.
Not sure what a variety of treatments means.
We know that there was already a chemotherapy unit in the PG Hospital and this will be moved to the new building. In addition I think that there are or was supposed to be Chemo units set up in outlying areas, so that people wouldnt have to travel to Prince George for treatment. Hopefully this is still on the books.
So other than the radiation treatment, what are we actully getting for the $102 Million dollars.
Hopefully we will be able to get the proper people to run this facility, and service the whole of North Central BC.
One should keep in mind that it is not just people who needed radiation treatment that had to leave Prince George for service. There are many other operations that are performed either in Vancouver,Victoria, or Kelowna. In fact we even have (or had) cases of people going to Quesnel to have their babies.
So its a bigger problem than just cancer, however it is a step in the right direction.
What are we going to do with all the extra space in the PG Hospital??? Another fast food restaurant???
“Another fast food restaurant???”
Good one Pal. Fast food restaurant in a hospital = one stop life cycle shopping. Get your poison and the antidote in the same place. After all, it has been proven that the modern industrial food system is responsible for many of todays illnesses in people. Cancers of all types, type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart disease etc.
Should have drinking and smoking parlours in the hospital too. Those who wish to ban tobacco smoking should also be crusading against subsidies to Big Agra that allow substances such as high fructose corn syrup to be sold so cheaply to food manufacturers.
Oh and, glad to see that P.G. has a new state of the art cancer treament center, that, and the Kordyban Lodge will make life a bit easier for patients.
