Long Gun Registry Now Destroyed

Thursday, November 1, 2012 @ 2:37 PM

Ottawa – Bob Zimmer, Member of Parliament for Prince George-Peace River announced that as of October 31, 2012, the long-gun registry, with the exception of registry information related to Quebec, has been destroyed.

“The deletion of the long-gun registry records marks a significant milestone in our Government’s commitment to eliminating the wasteful and ineffective long-gun registry,” said Mr. Zimmer.

Law-abiding gun owners will no longer be unfairly targeted, as the Government continues to focus its efforts on more effective measures to tackle crime and protect families and communities.

The deletion of data in the registry related to long-guns follows the Royal Assent of Bill C-19, the Ending of the Long-Gun Registry Act, on April 5, 2012.

“Now that these data have been deleted, they can never be recovered, ensuring that we never again criminalize or penalize law-abiding hunters, farmers, and sport-shooters," said Mr. Zimmer. “Our Government will continue making our streets and communities safer by targeting the real criminals who use firearms.”

There is NO WAY I believe the Government, Even though I wish it was True.If you have a PAL or POL, Then you probably have a firearm, and The Government or the Police Who will NOT take orders from the Government (read CFO,s )can take them any time they want to.

Bottom line……

It took 19 years to get rid of this stupid registry.

Thats the problem with rushing into legislation. Its takes forever to get rid of it.

If it hadnt been for the Conservative majority, it would still be with us.

Have a nice day.

yes Don – the CFOs will raid your house…
ps – I have PAL and not a firearm in the house, but I dont have a tinfoil hat, I guess I should be worried.

the registry was compiled by the federal gov’t. the federal gov’t coveres all of canada therefore why was quebec allowed too be treated different? this should not be allowed.

Because the Quebec government went to court to have the information related to Quebec remain accessible to them. I believe it’s still in front of the courts. Litigation is a very easy way to stop something in in tracks, at least for as long as it takes for the courts to resolve the various issues. Something like the gun registry is probably fairly straight forward. Things like a pipeline forced upon a Province and First Nations, probably not so much, LOL.

This is a good move on the part of the Conservative government, even though it’s been a long time in coming. I commend them for having the perseverance and courage to go through with it in the face of the noisy minority opposed.

I’m quite happy that this is finally over. Sure, you may be targeted in the future if you have a PAL or a POL but for now it seems to be all good.

I got rid of all my guns when this goofiness started and regretted it ever since. Thank goodness common sense has prevailed on this issue. The only people disarmed were the innocent ones.

Quebec has always been a pain in the a— even though I adore that province for a lot of common sense laws, such as having a beer in a restaurant without buying food.
I sold all my long rifles with the stipulation that I may borrow them any time from now until I die. No one will ever find out who owns them. I probably will decide to buy some others now that the registry is void and no one will know that either. We are getting closer to a free country since the Conservatives took power.

does this mean that I do not have to renew my PAL

“does this mean that I do not have to renew my PAL”

No, you still need a PAL to purchase guns and ammo. The only difference is, you don’t need to register the guns you buy. You still need to show that you’re not a loon when you go to buy a gun. :)

I wonder what’s happening to New Brunswick’s economy now that the registry is dead?

You need a PAL to “possess” as well.

We just received a bill from the govt to renew our POL at a cost of $80. What’s up with that? When we took the course and had to pay for the POL our money was refunded but now (5 year later) the letter states that our POL will expire on my birthday.

So pay up or you don’t have a POL? No reasoning why the letter was sent out. I have to contact our MLA to find out what’s going on. Any ideas?

Explains it all to you. Even gives you a phone number if you have questions.

Yes they dumped the long gun registry but brought back the licence fees.

“Yes they dumped the long gun registry but brought back the licence fees.”

And there is absolutely nothing wrong with having users pay for the system. We need to adopt more user pay systems.

I have no qualms about paying 80 bucks for a 5 year license.

Wonder how many servers were freed up with the deletion of this data.

Go out and buy a rifle and you won’t have to register it. Which kinda makes the existing data even less useful than it already was.
