Air Quality Advisory Issued For Prince George

Thursday, November 1, 2012 @ 3:02 PM

Prince George, BC – The Ministry of Environment has now issued an air quality advisory for the City of Prince George, as well as Vanderhoof, due to high levels of fine particulate matter.

Air Quality Meteorologist, Dennis Fudge, says, "Based on air quality data, the high levels are mainly due to long range transport of smoke from open burning west of Vanderhoof, with some contribution from local wood smoke and emissions from industry."

A City’s Clean Air bylaw prohibits all open burning, including backyard burning and land clearing burning.  During advisories, recreational burning and the use of wood-burning appliances is prohibited, except for sole wood-burning heat users.

Fudge says a high pressure weather ridge moving over the area may continue to trap pollutants in the airshed and keep particulate levels high overnight.  He expects some improvement by tomorrow afternoon.

Open burning west of Vanderhoof?
Does that mean the logging companies are burning their debris piles again?
Or something else perhaps?

Chip it. Don’t burn it. How come no road dust excuse this time?

I passed by a field west of Vanderhoof last Saturday that must have had at least 20 very large piles right next to the Hwy.

I wondered why when I noticed them but now I know why.

Give your heads a shake. We can’t roast weiners in the back yard, yet the government regulators continue to allow open burning in this province. Two faced Hippocrites.

I don’t recall a burning brush pile smelling like downtown prince george either! What a joke!

The new wood stoves are supposed to be smoke free! So if I buy one, who will know when I’m burning. On another note — I know for a fact that the city has no bylaw regarding burning that carries a fine or disipline of any type. They do have a bylaw that condemns it “if it interferes with the neighbors quality of life.” Ha Ha… What the hell is all the air advisory crap about?? It’s all about putting on appearances and nothing more. It is as fraudulent as the core review.
Who cares and why?? Nothing you can say or do will change the wind or huge corporations. Suck it up or move.

Brings back memories of the California firm that was hired by city hall and came up with a report about the all the home owners who burned wood for heating. The report was quickly shelved by city council.

Why is always some outside source like road dust, slash burning, etc that are the causes of air pollution but never industry located in city limits.
