Temporary Foreign Workers Program to Be Reviewed by Feds

Thursday, November 8, 2012 @ 4:34 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The Federal Government has announced it will expand the review of the Temporary Foreign Workers program beyond the specific case of the Chinese workers in north-east B.C., to include a review of the entire national program.

The BC Federation of Labour is calling for the review to be open and transparent. “This program is seriously flawed and is open to wide spread abuse” says Federation President Jim Sinclair. “The government was forced to lift the curtain on one case involving temporary foreign workers and found that our concerns about the entire program were obviously justified.”

HD Mining  had advertised jobs  on its Murray River Coal project, but claimed there were  no Canadians qualified  to do the required work.  It was then granted  permission to bring more than 200 Chinese workers to B.C. for the project.

Details of the review have yet to be released. Sinclair is calling for a fully transparent review by a third party that is not under government control.

Hey dont forget that these same chinese workers blasted their way through the coast mountains to give us a continental railway. There were no canadian workers then are there any now?

Well lets face it Harper dosent give a hoot about who mines the coal as long as there is lots of profit for his freinds in high places.
Cheers

Thank you Jim Sinclair for looking out for the Canadian worker. I no longer work but I am sure there are Canadians that need jobs and there are many different kind of jobs that can be done by ourown people before we seek workers elsewhere. Also why do we only hire chinese workers? It’s fine to include them into the mix but not exclusively IMHO.

True! These people made are rail lines, these people should get full right to work in bc or Canada!

I’m not certain, I believe “these people ” that made our rail lines are probably all deceased. So whom are you referring to?

Sorry to burst everyone’s bubble but the Chinese workers who built the railways are for the most part dead. There might be a few left alive but I would imagine the probably are not looking for work at this time.

The problem of allowing the foreign workers in is the fact that they will likely be exploited just as the Chinese who built the rail way were.

billy is right. these are no workers, they will be slaves, living the lives of sixteen tons of # 9 coal.

Whatever role they play–we don’t need them. Canadians need those jobs –

Besides, this review is about ALL foreign hired workers, NOT just the ones from China, its just that they are the focus because of the coal mine fiasco. To bring in a specific skill set that is not available locally is ok, but it looks like this mine took advantage of the loopholes to basically staff its mine with workers who would work for less and more than likely not complain about worker safety issues. That is not what the foriegn worker bill is supposed to be for. This issue is about the chinese workers because I believe that particular mine is actually chinese owned as well.

OPerating a mine requires many different jobs, loader operators, grader operators, truck drivers, mechanics, machinists, welders, plumbers, painters, electricians, secretarial workers and clerks. I have worked in mines for the majority part of my life and believe me when our Prime Minister says there aren’t qualified people in our workforce I don’t believe he looked for workers to man the jobs that’s required for these new jobs and if that means training our own people then why not get started.
