Bob Rae is travelling western Canada gathering the input of both party members and the general public on matters of concern to this part of the country. And, with the federal Liberal party set to elect a new leader on April 14th, 2013, Rae, who is not running for the job, wants to find out which of the candidates has the support of party members here in BC.
Rae is meeting with party faithful in Prince George today, and will hold a session with the public at 5:30 this afternoon at the Civic Centre, Room 205.
Rae is also travelling to Kitimat and the Haisla First Nation to discuss the highly-contentious Enbridge Northern Gateway Pipeline project.

He will be met at the airport by all the people who voted for his party from this region. There will be a meet and greet held inside a phonebooth by the arrivals lounge.
James Castonguay will be in PG today too, I believe.
I’m surprised to read that Bob even knows where Western Canada is.
Fishing expedition on the taxpayer’s dime.
Room 205, Isn’t that just a small room upstairs at the civic center. Hmmmm, looks like a serious rebuild campaign.
Hard to believe how far the party has fallen in 15 short years.
Bob Rae is a very knowledgeable person but in this den of PC’s that PG is blessed with all we get is childish coments.
Cheers
It’s a new season Mr. Rae. Your party needs to rebuild with fresh faces and a clear direction. That takes time. I think the Liberals need to clarify and define their vision of what they believe and where they would like to take us. If it isn’t much different than the other two parties, good luck.
I guess he is coming here to try and see if he can get the voters of BC to accept his idea of having RAE days implemented here like he did when he was NDP Premier of Ontario. Work 1 day per month for the government. That didn’t work so he turn coated to the Liberals. Will he jump back to the NDP now that they are the offical opposition?
Retired 02, when you say PC do you mean Progressive Conservative? The party dropped the “P”. After saddling up with Reform/Alliance, they should probably be called the “Regressive Conservative” party. Voter apathy in this region has given “Invisible Dick” an almost guaranteed win in every election. We get the government we deserve.
govsux. How do you come up with **voter apathy** in this riding.
The last election result was.
1. Harris 24,443
2. NDP 13,135
3. Grn 2,702
4. Lib 2,190
5. CHP 440.
The numbers would indicate that if there was some apathy it is with the other parties. The Conservatives seem to be alive and well.
Bob Rae is nothing more than a career politican firmly esconced on the gravy train, along with Harris.
The liberals do not even compete for riding’s in Northern BC.
They appoint looser candidates they know don’t stand a chance in these riding’s as political patronage, and in doing so piss off the locals and in effect give the conservatives a free ride to some free seats. Its like the liberal party is a party of Eastern Canada that appoints their western Canadian nominees at election time. That has to change if they want to become serious contenders in the west.
That said I think the liberals best bet is Justine Trudeau. I didn’t like his arrogant dad and would never have voted for him, but I think Justine is a little more rounded than his dad was. Justine has connections to BC and therefore would be more willing than most Eastern politicians to factor in consideration for BC issues.
In regards to issues… the next federal election will be about liberalizing and legalizing marijuana. The ndp have already hinted they will be adopting that position… the winds are blowing that way with recent legalization in Washington. I think if the liberals have a strong position on that issue and allow for a local nomination processes they would become a serious contender for seats in BC.
Under the last Liberal federal government (Paul Martin), federal money was being spent in Prince George (UNBC sport complex and the airport runway expansion). However, the first conservative canceled all of this funding. Even with construction already started on the sports complex. So to say that the Federal Liberals don’t know where PG is is a bit of a fallacy.
To me, this seems to be the first step in rebuilding the Liberal party. This trip is the second one from an opposition leaders in recent years. However, the current PM has never been to PG.
Thunderboltz. Where do you get your information from???
The Northern Sports Centre was funded with
1. $20.5 Million from the BC Government
2. $5.125 Million from the City of Pr George
3. $5.125 Million from UNBC.
This was a BC Government Olympics project and the Feds were not involved in the funding, although I suspect that part of the Provincial $20.5 Million came from the Feds.
The Airport Runway expansion was funded as follows.
1. $11 Million from the Airport Authority (Borrowed from the Northern Development Initiative Trust)
2. $11 Million from the Federal Government
3. $11 Million from the Provincial Government.
PS. Paul Martin was long gone by the time these projects were funded and built. The Federal Government funding came from the Conservative Government and Harris.
“Under the last Liberal federal government (Paul Martin), federal money was being spent in Prince George (UNBC sport complex and the airport runway expansion). However, the first conservative canceled all of this funding.”
So is this why we are paying for the sport complex? Liberals did not want to revisit it?
;)
