Remembrance Day for Road Crash Victims

Wednesday, November 21, 2012 @ 3:55 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Today is the  fourth annual National Day of Remembrance for Road Crash Victims in Canada, and the  Prince George RCMP are  throwing their support behind it.

Many volunteers will be taking part in the Speed Watch program in areas throughout the City. Members of the Detachment’s Traffic Services Section will be out supporting our volunteers by conducting enforcement in those areas.

Statistics suggest that  on average, 6 Canadians die each day on  Canada’s roads.  So far  this year,  there have bbeen  1980 deaths on  Canada’s roadways,  and 151,689  injuries.

In the last five years, 328 people have been killed in car crashes in the North Central region.  Each October  there are, on average, 24  collisions  resulting in  injuries or death in the North Central region  due to people driving too fast for the road conditions, and as conditions worsen, that number more than doubles to 50 in December.

"In support of the families of those that have lost their lives on our roadways, the Prince George RCMP’s Municipal Traffic Services Section and volunteers from our Community Policing office, will be out spreading the message to slow down and drive to the road conditions" says S/Sgt. Brad Anderson, in charge of Operations at the Prince George RCMP. "More than 300 people have lost their lives in our region over the last five years and many of them due to speed".

An average of 27 people are killed each year in the North Central region in speed-related crashes.

Don’t forget about the morons who insist to use their cell phones while driving!

————————-

There are a whole lot of drivers that should be targeted in addition to the cellphone users. How about these idiots who don’t turn their lights on when it’s dark? Or the idiot who does 40 up the Hart while straddling both lanes? Or the tailgaters? There is no shortage of them. How about those idiots who whip out of a side street just to get in front of you then proceed to go slower than you were? Or those idiots who can’t comprehend, “Keep Right Except To Pass”? They should lose their license on the spot just for being stupid. How about those guys who run red lights? Why don’t we have a day where the traffic cops do nothing but hand out tickets at intersections?

One thing I really don’t understand about these speed enforcement campaigns is the need to advertise them. Seriously, if you want to catch speeders don’t tell them that on Nov. 21 you’ll have extra patrols out looking for them. Catch them by surprise; most people will only learn if you hit their wallet.

@ axman, reverend…I`m not a perfect driver but it is sad that innocent victims pay for those that need to be there as fast as possible or leave home a few minutes too late.

Getting there quicker and leaving to work late, speeding my save you some time but time stands still for the family`s of the people you kill.

Axman…..You forgot the idiots that don’t know the difference between yield and merge. But all in all, you pretty much got the list complete. :)

How about local radio station/s announcing speed traps, help or hindrance. On one hand drivers slow down when they get closer to the speed trap…set up another trap beyond the one announced on the radio station….I wont say which station “THAT ROCKS!!!

Announcing speed traps on the radio doesn’t do anything to get bad drivers off the streets. Hitting them with fines might have an effect.

There is only one Remembrance Day; November 11th. These people volunteered, fought and died for their country. Now the traffic cops are using the name to remember people who drive too fast, drink and drive, refuse to wear seat belts , etc. Surely they can come up another name rather than associating with Remembrance Day ! Shame shame ! Maybe they should call it Dday……Dead Dumb Driver’s Day !
