Cats Edge Pats 4-3.
The Prince George Cougars are back in the win column after a dramatic 4-3 shootout victory Tuesday against the Regina Pats. The Cougars outshot Regina 40-16, and came back from a 3-1 deficit to earn their eighth victory of the season. Brad Morrison and Carson Bolduc each scored their first ever goals in the WHL in the victory.
The Cougars trailed 2-0 after one period despite outshooting the Pats 12-5. Matt Hewitt made some tough saves early for Regina to keep his team in it.
Mid-way through the first, Regina capitalized twice in 41 seconds. First it was Lane Scheidl who buried his own rebound off a faceoff. Mac Engel made a glorious first save, but Scheidl buried the rebound for his 12th of the season.
41 seconds later it was Scheidl again, this time on a Regina power play. Scheidl raced across the blueline, went wide on the defense and fired a shot up high over the right shoulder of Mac Engel for his second of the game, and 13th of the season.
Fast forward to the mid-way mark of the second period and the Prince George Cougars finally solved Matt Hewitt. Alex Forsberg found Dallas Ehrhardt, who fired a shot from the high slot. Brad Morrison re-directed Ehrhardt’s point shot past Matt Hewitt for his first ever goal in the WHL. In two games this season, Morrison has now recorded a goal and an assist.
At 14:05 of the second, Alex Forsberg was hauled down on a breakaway, and was given a penalty shot. Forsberg came in on Hewitt and made a nice move to the forehand, but Hewitt got his right pad on the puck, and kept the game 2-1.
11 seconds later, the Pats made it 3-1 when Morgan Klimchuk scored his 14th off a nice two-on-one pass from Emil Sylvegard.
Credit the Cougars for sticking with their game plan. Just over a minute after Klimchuk’s 3-1 marker, Carson Bolduc won an offensive zone faceoff and lifted a backhand past Matt Hewitt for his first ever Western Hockey League goal.
The Cougars completed the comeback in the final minute of the second when Jarrett Fontaine settled a bouncing puck in the slot and fired a backhander past Matt Hewitt for his second of the season, and it was 3-3 heading into the final period. Prince George outshot Regina 13-3 in the second.
There was no offense in the third, but it was not for a lack of trying. The Cougars put 14 more shots towards Matt Hewitt but were unable beat him. Mac Engel stood tall and stopped the five shots he faced in the final frame.
Regina outshot the Cougars 3-1 in overtime, but the best chance in OT came off of the stick of Jari Erricson who blasted a shot off of the left post.
For a second time in a row and for a fourth time in November the Cougars would need a shootout to decide the game.
After Zach Pochiro missed his chance, Lane Scheidl skated in for Regina and beat Mac Engel through the legs to make it 1-0 Regina.
Daulton Siwak answered with a spectacular shootout goal for Prince George which evened it up at one.
Morgan Klimchuk, Brad Morrison, and Dyson Stevenson all missed their chances, which gave Carson Bolduc a chance to give the Cougars a lead. The 16-year-old did not disappoint, as he skated down the middle of the ice and beat Matt Hewitt.
Mac Engel sealed the deal with a poke-check save off of Colby Williams, and the Cougars earned their eighth victory of the season. Their record now sits at 8-11-1-3.
The final shots on goal were 40-16 for the Cougars who finished the game one-for-three on the power play. Prince George will now head to Victoria for their first of four straight meetings with the Victoria Royals.

Attendenc 1454. Thats about the lowest I’ve seen it. When will the free fall end.
Why are we hosting a WHL franchise, when no one is interested in it????
Fans in this town suck far worse than the hockey! I guess the Caribou Cougars can play in front of a 100 fans there once the Cougars move!
I agree with cougs78
P.G. is only a bandwagon type town. I watch every game I can. It is nice to win but to see the moments of the game like a great save, goal or play is also enyoyable. This level of hockey is good valued entertainment. Once this team leaves I think it will be a long time before any one else looks at this fickle hick of a town. Too bad.
Fans are those that actually go to the games cougs. Why do they suck!
“The Cougars outshot Regina 40-16, and came back from a 3-1 deficit to earn their eighth victory of the season”
I’d say these numbers are a clear indication why so many years ago, people stopped going to games.
