Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings went to overtime for the fourth time in their past eight games Friday night and looked as if they had secured a victory.
However it was not to be at the Coliseum as the Surrey Eagles came away with a 2-1 win in double overtime. The clubs were scoreless through one. The Spruce Kings notched their marker at 9:57 of the second period as Tanner Fjellstrom found the back of the net. However Surrey bounced right back. The Kings’ Mitch Eden was assessed a hooking minor at 11:08 and Jordan Klimek capitalized with the man advantage at 12:40 to even the game at 1.
No scoring in the third period and that set the stage for what appeared to be the winner for the home club in overtime. Just 30 seconds into the extra frame the Spruce Kings mounted a three on two rush that appeared to everyone in the building to wind up with Tyson Witala scoring for the win. The goal judge turned the light on, the ref at first called it a goal, but then a scrum of on-ice officials lasting several minutes ended with the play being called no goal.
The four-on-four first O/T period closed out and then they went three-on-three in the second overtime and it was Michael Stenerson scoring at 3:57 to give the visitors the win.
The Eagles outshot Prince George 39-36 and are now one point up on the Kings in the Mainland Division.
The Spruce Kings will be out for revenge Saturday night when once again they host the Eagles at 7pm at the Coliseum.
