Spruce Kings Snap Losing Skid

Prince George, B.C. – How do you snap a five-game losing streak? Invite the worst team in the BC Hockey League into your barn and give them a good old fashioned thumping.
That’s the tack the Prince George Spruce Kings would like to have taken to break out of a slump which has seen them drop five straight, the last four on home ice, two in overtime. Geared toward turning things around on this final weekend of a 7-game home stand, the Spruce Kings came flying out of the gate on Coliseum ice against the Cowichan Valley Capitals Friday night. However the home club couldn’t find the magic to bury the last-place team in the league standings.
The first period was scoreless, Prince George outshooting Cowichan Valley 11-9. The Capitals took two of the three minors handed out in the opening frame.
Jeremiah Luedtke opened the scoring for the Kings at 1:26 of the second and Tanner Fjellstrom made it 2-0 on the power play at 7:31. That was the first Prince George power play goal in the last 5 games. And the Kings had a chance to blow it open just moments later when Tyson Witala fired at what appeared to be a glaring net, only to have the Caps’ Derek Dun come up with a huge save to keep his team in the game. Luke Gordon made it 2-1 at the 14:48 mark after the Kings had turned the puck over on the rush at the Cowichan blue line and were outmanned going back the other way. Spruce Kings outshot Cowichan 12-5. The Caps again took two of three minors in the period.
Lots of back and forth, tight checking, and a number of good scoring chances for the Kings in the third, but it took Coltyn Hansen’s empty netter with 54 seconds left in the third to give the Spruce Kings a 3-1 victory. Shots were 12-9 PG as the Spruce Kings outshot Cowichan Valley 35-23 on the contest.
That gives Prince George 32 points, good for third place in the Mainland Division standings. They hold a one-point edge over the Coquitlam Express, with the Express in town for games Saturday night at 7:30 and Sunday afternoon at 3.
