Cougars Double Giants 2-1.
The Prince George Cougars are heading into their holiday break on a high note after a 2-1 victory in front of 4000-plus fans at the CN Centre on Sunday. Carson Bolduc broke a 1-1 tie early in the third, and for a second straight season, Alex Forsberg scored the Prince George Cougars ‘ Teddy Bear’ goal.
It was a scoreless period after one, but the Giants held a drastic edge in the shots department. Vancouver outshot the Cougars 13-7 in the first, and Brett Zarowny had to make some key saves in the first to keep the game even.
Late in the second period, Vancouver got on the board when Trevor Cheek beat Brett Zarowny on a quick shot from the left circle for his 12th of the season.
From there, Vancouver continued to apply pressure, and came close again on a couple of occasions. At one point the Giants had a very lengthy possession in the Cougars zone, but were unable to capitalize.
At the end of that sequence, and at the end of a very long shift, Alex Forsberg skated the puck into the Vancouver zone, cut to the middle and was able to beat Payton Lee with a low shot to tie the game at one.
For Alex Forsberg it was his ninth of the season, and his second consecutive ‘Teddy Bear’ goal for the Prince George Cougars.
After the cleanup, the Cougars and Giants finished the final 2:13 of the second period, and then went straight into the third.
The Cougars and Giants traded chances in the early part of the third, and then 6:02 of the third, the Cougars grabbed the game’s final goal. Brett Roulston forced a Vancouver turnover at their blueline, and skated down the right wing and put a hard shot on goal. Payton Lee made the save for Vancouver, but the rebound deflected off of Carson Bolduc and into the net. Bolduc’s second of the season gave the Cougars a 2-1 lead that they would not relinquish.
Vancouver had some great chances in the final half of the third to tie the game, but Brett Zarowny answered the bell, and earned his second straight victory of the weekend and his eighth victory of the season. In the end, Zarowny stopped 35 of the 36 shots he faced. At the other end, Payton Lee faced 23 shots and made 21 saves.
Neither team was able to score on the power play. Prince George finished the game zero-for-three while the Giants went zero-for-one.
The Cougars will now enjoy a break until the 28th of December, where they’ll go head-to-head with the Victoria Royals twice, and will then meet the Giants again on December 30th in Vancouver.
