Safe Transportation Along Highway 16 Promised
Monday, December 17, 2012 @ 3:05 PM
Prince George, B.C. – The Provincial Government is taking immediate action on some of the recommendations from the report on the Murdered and Missing Women.
Minister of Justice Shirley Bond says the Province will engage with communities along the Highway 16 corridor to provide safer transportation along that corridor.
She has also announced the Province has appointed Steven Point, the former Lieutenant Governor of B .C. as the Head of an Advisory Committee that will continue dialogue with families and communities. The Advisory committee will examine the healing and reconciliation process.
Minister Bond fought back tears as she spoke of the women whose lives were lost, and the families which must bear this grief. She said the Government is also making sure the Wish Drop in Centre in Vancouver’s downtown east side is able to expand its hours of service and is providing an extra $750 thousand dollars to make that happen.

^^^ Bah humbug.
It`s a Xmas miracle…
The timing is impeccable!!! All these years in office and now you pledge to take action?
Crocodile tears maybe Bond..
And in other news, the Govt will fund yet another direct competitor to the existing Greyhound service already looking to cut runs along Highway 16. This in addition to the medical bus and subsidized trips on Via Rail to “status” people
wonderful……
northern_curmudgeon…. what status people you talking bout???
“Vote Buying” definition: Used by NDP supporters; anything the Government does that might be construed in a positive way.
>>>>. silence
apparently, I hit a raw nerve for the rest of my inquisitive statement was deleted
Of all places, here in Prince George??? We still have people like that and the editors protect “”their”” freedom of speech???
“Vote buying”, Definition: Used by the citizens of a province, state or country to describe the unabashed pulling of taxpayers $$$ out of the reigning govt’s butt nearing an election that said govt cannot possibly win, to spend where they please in a pitiful attempt at buying votes to remain in power.
Also known as “You’re so low you can play handball against a curb”.
“will engage” “will continue” “will examine”.
When are you planning on doing all this Shirley? Your time is up.
Where were you with all your “wills” over the past 11 years? Tears for sure.
“…anything the government does that might be construed in a positive way”
Meaningless drivel.
She fought back tears? What a joke!! I happen to know a couple of the families involved, I don’t even fight back tears at this stage of the game. You learn to accept it after the years pass.
But what an actress, I can’t believe she pretends she’s fighting back tears!!!!! Like she really cares.
Shirley Bond makes an announcement that will hopefully benefit the people of this province and the communities along Highway 16.
She also announces the appointment of Steven Point, our former Lieutenant Governor of BC as the Head of an Advisory Committee that will continue dialogue with families and communities. The Advisory committee will examine the healing and reconciliation process.
An excellent choice as Steven Point served as Chief of the Slowkale First Nation from 1975 to 1999! He will certainly be receptive to the concerns of the First Nations people along Highway 16!
Sadly, in response to this announcement, the usual NDP loving boneheads on this site have nothing good at all to say. How pathetic people!!
I don’t know Shirley Bond very well, although I have had the opportunity to chat with her one-on-one on a number of occasions, usually while sitting in an airport waiting for a flight. I can honestly say that she cares more about the people of this province and she works harder by far, than the vast majority of those of you condemning her on this site!
It’s a free country! If any of you feel you can do a better job, put your name on a ballot and let’s see how many people vote for you!
Sheesh, what a bunch of freaking clowns!
I think NH Connections was established so that all folks in the north could have transportation to and from non emergency medical appointments and surgeries not available in the north,Via Rail offers a 35% discount for 1st Nations people but all senior native or not get 35% off on Via and I`m pretty sure Gray Hound has some pretty good deals available for everyone.
That is correct VS, if you have a status card, you get a dicounted fare on Via. Its a simple and true statement of fact-no ill will or mailice intended. How you read it is your business
so lets see. there is greyhound servicing the west, a train, and there are some folks that still want some more? oh right i can see it now. a taxpayer funded free service for those that cant pay. hmmmm.
feel for the missing women, but this is getting insane.
I agree we have many forms of transport on 16,convincing young ladies to not make hasty decisions when they feel the need to leave on short notice. Someone has to be there to say alright we`,ll get you out just wait until we can put you on a bus train or acquire a safe ride. These women were very vulnerable but there`s more to it than transportation.
If you check the homeless shelters, talk to down town street people in Prince George or Vancouver I`ll put a toownie on the fact that a good majority of them are not from that area.
Who wants to be homeless in their home town???
Spur of the moment decisions to leave this town or come to it or some other town, won’t necessarily coincide with the transportation schedules.
That is often how people end up hitchhiking.
Even the most caring society can’t protect all of its citizens for poor choices and decisions every time.
There is a limit to the amount of cubic cash that can be thrown at a problem or the money simply runs out and no one gets what they want. Everyone has a pet project they want funded, a million here, 2 million there, only 3 million, just 3.5 million for me. Pretty soon it adds up to some real money and cuts get made.
