Calgary, AB — The Cariboo Cougars came back from a 3-1 deficit to beat the Calgary Northstars 6-3 as they have started round-robin play at the Mac’s Midget Tournament 2-0.

The hometown Northstars scored twice in the first half of the opening period. Liam Blackburn scored on the power play from Donovan Law and Braiden Epp with just over seven minutes to go to enter the first intermission down by one.

The Northstars started the second period on the man advantage and while the Cats killed it off, Calgary scored just seconds after Logan Styler stepped out of the box to go up by two.

Cougars head coach Trevor Sprague then replaced starting goaltender Jeremy Matte with Nathan Warren. The switch seemed to have its desired effect as three and a half minutes later Brad Morrison scored on the power play from Epp and Blackburn. Tyler Povelofskie scored his first of the tournament on the power play midway through the second as the Cougars tied the game at three.

Just 20 seconds into the third, Povelofskie earned his second of the game, also on the power play, from Morrison and Nick Headrick to give the Cats their first lead of the game.

The Cougars held onto the one goal lead until Kirk Hards potted his third of the tournament with just over eight minutes on the clock with Thane Anderson picking up the lone assist. Styler added some extra insurance making no mistake on a breakaway.

The Cougars remain the only undefeated team in their pool as both Edmonton SSAC Athletics and Winnipeg Wild enter Saturday with 2-1 records.

Warren stopped all nine shots he faced for the win as the Cougars massively outshot the Northstars 38-19. The win marks the first time the Cats have ever gone 2-0 to start the Mac’s.

The Cougars next face the Prince Albert Mintos Saturday at 5:15pm at Father David Bauer Arena.
