RCMP say Highway 97 will be closed in both directions through that stretch for several hours.
The investigation is ongoing but early information indicates the crash occurred around 5 p.m.
Police have not yet released how many people were involved in the crash, the contributing factors, the types of vehicles involved, or the names of those involved.
Police say there is a detour available but it is "iffy", that route would see"light" northbound traffic (no semis or logging trucks) travel north on Kelly Road, and east on Christopher Road to highway 97. Again, this detour is only an option for light traffic.
It is expected the highway will re-open sometime between 11:00 p.m. and 1 a.m.

Not sure of the specifics of this one but it was pretty slippery through this stretch yesterday.
My condolences to the families and victims.
Very sad for New Year’s Eve.
why cant this city take care of the roads? or even just the hwy. this part of the road is danger!
condolences to all effected by this tragedy
Boudicca, All roads are dangerous to drive on in the winter months. People have to start slowing down instead of laying blame on city crews and hwy crews. I have been driving that hwy for the 10 years and i have never had a accident. Slow down or stay home. My condolences to the families
Seeings as how none of us have any information as to what caused the incident, lets all jump all over road maintenance. Heck while were at it lets take a few shots at our mayor, our elected MP’s and the Premier. Gotta be a few more conclusions we can all jump to?
Compared to previous years, though, the roads seem worse. Whether or not it’s from the lack of plowing, or something else. And yes, people drive far to fast for the conditions.
Was there a name released for the fatality the poor fellow who passed away? What a tragedy.
