NHL May Have Battle to Win Back Fans
Sunday, January 6, 2013 @ 11:20 AM
Prince George, B.C.- The NHL owners and players have a tentative agreement, one that came at the end of a 16 hour session with a mediator.
Although not yet finalized, there is talk that if approved by both sides, the season could start up as early as the 15th of this month.
While not scientific, a 250News poll suggests the lockout has been costly to the fan base.
When asked, “Have you lost interest in hockey as a result of the NHL lockout?” a full 86.6% (550) voted yes, while just 13.4% ( 85) voted no.

I found the 250News poll to be poorly worded. It should have read “Have you lost interest in NHL hockey as a result of the lockout?”.
I haven’t lost interest in hockey at all, just the NHL itself.
i would love to tell you that because of the lock-out I have lost interest, but push comes to shove on a saturday night when the Canucks are at home against Boston or Chicago or any other team for that matter I will be tuned in with a beer.
The poll should have asked “will you stop watching nhl hockey because of the lockout”. That may have been a more accurate assessment.
I know that I will be watching hockey again, but I will not be giving up any of my money for Hockey Related Revenue. No money on hockey sweaters, etc., and when I do watch, I will carefully watch for sponsors and not buy what they are selling. Email the sponsors, and let them know that my money is not going to them. Send a message-no more money from fans. If we all go back and let things be the way they were before, get ready for yet another half a season to disappear in eight years.
Flash…sorry to tell you but in order for you to withhold all your money from the NHL you will have to cancel your cable or satellite service.
Heard a sports reporter say what he would like to see is during the first intermission of the first game, everyone leave and have them come out to an empty arena.
Oh this is so tragic, no hockey all these months. Be nice if the people took an interest in whats happening around them instead of watching these rich goons destroying each other. Maye we are no as civilized as we think we are.
Cheers
Flash. If their are no sponsors (advertisements) there will be no hockey on TV. I guess you could watch on Pay per View.
I guess I didn’t really say what I meant very well. If hockey revenues go down for the next few years or so, the players and the owners might think twice about doing this again. I’m sure a lot will disagree with me, but I am going to do my little bit to send a message to both NHL players and owners. I might be tilting at windmills, but I refuse to go back to the way it was before.
I have no doubt the players and owners are sitting there not the least bit worried about fans. They will be saying “Not concerned in the least, they will all return”
Well, I for one will not. Think this strike or lockout or whatever you wanna call it was all about greed.
So, yep, they’ve lost me.
More enjoyment watching the Minors and WHL any day.

Oops
There will always be fans in Canada. The small market US teams need to be worried.
It is fun watching all the sports commentators on TV start their love-in with the NHL again.
I think the NHL has done a lot of damage to its brand with many people, and many long time fans. It will be interesting to see how this year goes in terms of support.
Eh what the heck who am I kidding…. I’m back watchin… GO NUCKS GO!!!
This could actually be a blessing in disguise.
I’ve noticed a lot of attention drawn to CFL and a lot of younger hockey organizations. This may be very well what they’ve needed
Heard a sports reporter say what he would like to see is during the first intermission of the first game, everyone leave and have them come out to an empty arena.
Now this I would love to see. I’d even pay for that! LOL
You can take the hockey out of Canada, but you cant take Canada out of OCKEEEE!!!!!
I honestly don`t think the NHL has lost any fans, just had a lot of board fans it`s like porn you can stop watching it for awhile but once you hit that channel and it`s in your face, you just cant turn it off.
@hammmy, Better yet show up for the last ten minute…no concession sales no beer sales ., they would still have to play the games they are contracted to, would they not??
Alot of money for the rich pigs come from tv royalties. In effect to some degree we as Canadian citizens are subsidizing these whiny b****es to play. Boycott PPV & CBC,
refuse to buy merchandise. MLB got the message years ago after their strike, fans stayed away in droves. Time to teach these spoiled brats a lesson.
Yah that’ll fix em. Fly or drive to Vancouver ,pay for a hotel room and a ticket to the game and then leave 1/3 of the way through. They’ll get the message.
Sure, and maybe the Nuck fans could have a mini riot for old times sake.
Pretty obvious that the lockout didnt sent people flocking to Cougar games.
I look forward to the season, should be more intense than usual with the short scheduale.
Cant wait for the playoffs.
I would LOVE to see arena after arena sitting empty on the league’s season opener. It’s too bad it won’t happen, because it is well deserved. They seem to forget so easily, without your fans you have nothing. No multi million dollar contract to negotiate, no one to fill the seats. All in all it’s really too bad for the Maple Leafs…They will no longer be undefeated through the 2012-13 season.
I feel for the hundreds of thousands of people whose livelihood has suffered as a result of this dispute between overpaid players and greedy team owners.
metalman.
Are u kidding???????
We arent talking baseball!!!!!
What I can’t believe is all the media attention they have recieved over this dispute. Another thing I can’t believe is all the people who seem to live for the NHL.
Think about priorities people! All these guys are rich enough to get by without it. What are they doing for the poor of this country and the world? What are they doing for their neighbours?
I love hockey….I remember driving home from a day of shopping on saturday with a bucket of kentucky fried chicken and crappy coleslaw to watch the habs vs watever team…it was a staple in our household , hockey night in canada was a family event from grandparents to aunts and uncles,,,now all I see is a money driven, Betmanplay opera as to how the game and its league shall play..take us back or at least bring us back to good old time hockey with out the shit politics. just saying…..
I before E except after C
Besides millionaires being greedy…
what has been done for the FANS ?
increase in ticket prices etc.. the players/owners get the gold.. we get the shaft.
Ockeee, No ockeee….I will always support my favorite local pub.
NHL fans boycotting their teams ? Ya right, that will happen right after gamblers boycott the casinos ! They do what they do because the market is there !
what have been done for fans?
How about generations of entertainment. It is our choice if we choose to support teams, buy jerseys, go to games. Nobody holds a gun to our head.
