Prince George, B.C.-  Prince George Fire Rescue’s Hazardous Materials personnel are on the scene of an incident on 7th Avenue between Victoria and Brunswick that may involve hazardous materials.

Just before 1:00 pm, a pedestrian reported noxious-smelling smoke and a bubbling sound coming from a grate in the sidewalk surrounding a planted tree. This was confirmed by responding crews.

A mildly acidic chemical has been detected beneath the grate. Crews are working to neutralize the chemical and excavate the affected soil. Consultation is ongoing with the federal hazardous material advisory centre (CANUTEC) and the Provincial Emergency Program.

The immediate area has been cordoned off from pedestrian and vehicle traffic. 7th Avenue is closed between Victoria and Brunswick.
Motorists and pedestrians should avoid this area.
