All Clear Given on 7th Avenue

Prince George, B.C. – Prince George Fire Rescue officials say an incident on 7th Avenue did not involve hazardous materials after all.
Hazardous Materials personnel were called to 7th, adjacent to the Travelodge between Victoria and Brunswick, around 2:30pm Friday after a pedestrian reported noxious-smelling smoke and bubbling coming from a grate in the sidewalk surrounding a planted tree. The Hazmat team cordoned off the area to ensure public safety and then dug up the ground.
Assistant Chief Drew Larsen says the source of the problem turned out to be underground electrical wiring. He says the wiring was put in place years ago when the owners of the property decided they wanted lights surrounding their trees. Later they decided they didn’t want the lights but the wires were left in the ground, still connected to a power source. Asst Chief Larsen says with the recent moisture on the ground the live wire shorted, causing the smoke and smell.
He says when the Hazmat team arrived they had a reading which spiked but did not identify what the product was. Hence the digging up of the ground and the discovery of the “live wire.”
