Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings and Chilliwack Chiefs kicked off their three-games-in-five-nights battle for second place in the BCHL’s Mainland Division Friday night at the Coliseum.
They’ll stage round two here Saturday night before meeting up again in Chilliwack on Wednesday. The clubs went into the mini-series with the Chiefs in second place with 50 points to 45 for the Spruce Kings. You can make that Chiefs 52 points, Spruce Kings 45 following Friday night’s battle here, as the visitors knocked off their opponents 4-2 in round one. It was the fourth straight time this season Chilliwack has defeated their Prince George rivals.
Chilliwack scored the lone goal of the first period, a power play marker by Philip Zielonka at 12:39. The Spruce Kings outshot the Chiefs 15-11 in their first game back at the Coliseum since early December. Each team took three minor in the period. The home club evened it up, also on the power play, at the 6:45 mark of the second period as a hot David Stephens scored his first on home ice, assisted by Coltyn Hansen and Lyndon Martell. But Spencer Graboski put the visitors in the lead at 18:22 and the period ended 2-1 Chiefs. Chilliwack outshot the Kings 16-15 and took six minors to one for Prince George.
The third period mirrored the rest of the game with Prince George throwing everything they had at the Chilliwack net, only to be stymied by the hot goaltending of Mitch Gillam. He stoned the Kings on great opportunities time and again, and it was the Chiefs scoring at the 15:10 mark to make it 3-1 Chilliwack. The Spruce Kings, to their credit, kept it coming and it paid off when Bryant Christian found the back of the net at 17:13 to make it close. However the Chiefs salted it away with the empty netter with 10 ticks on the clock. The Spruce Kings had the edge in shots 18-10 in the third, and 48-37 over the game. Chilliwack took the lone minor of the third period.
Langley doubled Coquitlam 4-2 and hold a 3-point lead over the Express in the battle for fourth spot in the division. The first-place Surrey Eagles went to double overtime with West Kelowna and ended up in a 3-3 tie. So Surrey gets a point and retains first place in the Mainland Division with 53 points.
Spruce Kings and Chiefs, round 2, Saturday night at 7 at the Coliseum.
