Cougars Blank Silvertips 4-0.
Mark Holick’s first victory behind the bench of the Prince George Cougars was a convincing one. Saturday night in Prince George, Colin Jacobs scored twice, Rinalds Rosinskis added three assists, and Mac Engel stopped all 21 shots he faced for the shutout in a 4-0 Cougars victory over Everett. The win gives the Cougars a weekend split with the Silvertips, and puts them within four points of eighth place in the Western Conference.
The first period ended scoreless with Everett holding a slight edge in the shots department at 9-8. Both teams failed to score on two power play opportunities, but Everett came close on a number of chances late in the period. Luckily Mac Engel was there to make some key stops and keep the game scoreless after one.
Early in the second, it was a power play goal that was able to kick-start the Cougars offense. Colin Jacobs was able to pounce on a Troy Bourke rebound and shovel it underneath Austin Lotz for his 16th of the season.
Late in the second, the Cougars would add another and this one was a beauty. Seconds after his penalty expired, Rinalds Rosinskis took a pass from Jarrett Fontaine and fed a pass across to Jake Mykitiuk who skated in alone on Austin Lotz and roofed one for his first of the season. For Rosinskis it was his first of three assists on the night.
After two, the Cougars led 2-0, and were outshooting Everett 22-15.
Early in the third the Cougars struck again when Colin Jacobs deflected home a point shot from Rinalds Rosinskis for his second of the night, and his 17th of the season.
From there, the Cougars kept pouring it on, and had a number of quality chances to pad their lead. At the other end, Mac Engel continued to be sharp, and made some crucial saves in the final minutes on an Everett power play to keep the shutout intact.
With five seconds left in the third, the Cougars finished the game’s scoring when Zach Pochiro knocked down a Dallas Ehrhardt pass and beat Austin Lotz with a wrist shot for his eighth of the season. Pochiro’s goal came on the power play, which finished two-for-five on the night. Everett went zero-for-five on their opportunities.
Prince George (15-28-2-4) outshot Everett 39-21 and will now head to Seattle looking to inch within two points of the eighth placed Thunderbirds in the Western Conference playoff race. That game goes Tuesday night from Kent, Washington.
