Monday, January 28, 2013 @ 3:49 PM
Prince George- Black Ice on highway 16 west, has sent a logging truck into the ditch along with an SUV and a 4×4 pickup.
Witnesses say the logging truck may have applied its brakes near the intersection of West Lake Rd sending him into the ditch. A small SUV is in the ditch a half of a kilometre further up the road and a 4×4 pick up is in the snow bank at the side of the road after sliding into the ditch also near the same location.
A YRB sander is on its way to the area were the black ice is most prominent.
It appears there are no injuries.
Poor road conditions is believed to have contributed to the death of one person operating a semi that went off highway 97 south near Micro Wave Hill, north of Hixon. Two transport trucks, one hauling lumber were involved in the crash. Two other semis and two pickups were also involved. The extent of the injuries of the other drivers is not known. The accident occurred just before 2pm. today.
The highway is closed and is expected to remain that way for up to 14 hours according to police.

Maybe if drivrs drive at the speed limit (below in these conditions), less serious acidents would happen.

“West Lake Rd”

Blackwater Rd?

yrb sander on its way!!! so was this area sanded before the accidents?? the vanderhoof yrb keeps the roads west of clucuz lake in much better condition than the roads east of clucuz lake… its been this way for years as the eastern part is maintained or not maintained by the pg yrb!

“An YRB sander is on its way to the area were the black ice is most prominent.”

YRB road foreman are supposed to be cruising our hwy’s looking for bad spots that require sand etc. They must have been just behind the vehicles in the ditch.

This section was not sanded at the time of the collisions. That section was crazy slippery and I am assuming the crashees will be sore tomorrow but glad they are unscathed otherwise.

Condolences to the driver’s family that perished on the job North of Hixon.

I’m not sure why we need a special warning. At this time of year, people should drive with the assumption that black ice can appear at any time. Slow down and drive to the conditions. It is not that hard.
