Cougars Fall to Thunderbirds in Seattle.

Wednesday, January 30, 2013 @ 2:28 AM

Tuesday night in Kent, WA the Prince George Cougars dropped a 6-1 score to the Seattle Thunderbirds. Shea Theodore led the way with two goals and an assist for Seattle who scored three times in both the first and third periods.

Seattle took a 1-0 lead just 28 seconds into the game when Justin Hickman centered the puck in front of the Cougars goal to a waiting Luke Lockhart who potted his 15th of the season.

Just over four minutes later, Seattle struck again when Connor Sanvido and Shea Theodore combined off the rush. Theodore was able to beat Mac Engel with a backhand for his 10th. Theodore would then add a power play marker with just one minute and seven seconds left in the first to give Seattle a 3-0 cushion after the first.  Seattle outshot the Cougars 17-8 in the first frame.

It was a better second period for the Cougars who limited Seattle to just four shots against, while putting 12 shots on Seattle goaltender Brandon Glover.

The Cougars best opportunities came during a sequence where they had both a four-on-three and five-on-three power play. Brandon Glover kept the door shut though to keep the Cougars scoreless through two periods. Shots were 21-20 for Seattle through two.

Early in the third, Seattle added to their lead when Connor Honey knocked home a pass from Alexander Delnov for his 13th goal of the season.

Just over three minutes later the Cougars got on the board when Chase Witala was able to stuff a backhand shot past the pad of Brandon Glover on a wrap-around. Witala’s ninth moved the Cougars back within three, and they followed that goal with some more good chances, but Brandon Glover was up to the task.

Griffin Foulk and Justin Hickman added late goals for Seattle to clinch the 6-1 score. The final shot tally had Seattle ahead 38-30.

The Cougars were zero-for-five on the power play while the Thunderbirds were one-for-two.

Tuesday’s loss means that the Cougars (15-29-2-4) now trail the Thunderbirds by six points for the eighth playoff spot in the Western Conference. Fortunately the Cougars don’t have to wait long to return to action, as they’ll face the Tri City Americans on Wednesday night in Keenwick, WA.
