Cougars Fall 5-2 in Kennewick.
Wednesday night in Kennewick, WA the Prince George Cougars were defeated 5-2 by the Tri-City Americans. Justin Feser led the way with three points for the Ams while Chase Witala responded with both Cougars goals. The Cougars outshot Tri-City 44-32.
Tri-City led 2-0 after the first thanks to goals from Jesse Mychan and Malte Stromwall two minutes and 52 seconds apart. Mychan’s goal came off a nice fake wraparound attempt from Malte Stromwall who then fed Mychan in front, and Stromwall’s goal came off a cross-ice pass from Justin Feser. Shots were 14-10 after one for the home side.
Early in the second, the Americans padded their lead when Michael Plutnar took a pass in the high slot off a three-on-two rush, and beat Brett Zarowny up high for his sixth of the season.
From there, the Cougars responded well, putting a ton of shots on the Tri-City goal. Luke Lee-Knight made 22 saves in the period, including several during a five-on-three Cougars power play.
Halfway through the second period, Brett Zarowny was on the receiving of a painful collision with Americans forward Tyson Dallman. Zarowny stayed down on the ice for a few minutes and would have to be helped off the ice by the Cougars training staff. Mac Engel replaced Zarowny and played the remainder of the game.
Chase Witala would solve Lee-Knight towards the end of the second period on a power play, after he took a pass from Ryan Hanes and wrapped around the goal to bury his 10th of the season.
The two teams traded goals in the first half of the third period. First it was Parker Bowles who beat Mac Engel with a low shot to the stick side. 61 seconds later Chase Witala responded with his second of the game and third in his past two games.
Penalties then became a factor for the Cougars when both Raymond Grewal and Colin Jacobs received five-minute fighting majors in the same fight. Jesse Mychan hit Colin Jacobs behind the Cougars goal. Grewal came to the defense of his teammate and started fighting Mychan, only to have Jacobs pull him aside so that he could finish his business with Mychan.
Jacobs was given five-for-fighting and a game misconduct, and the Americans ended up with a full five-minute power play that they wouldn’t capitalize on.
Connor Rankin scored the game’s final goal at 16:50 to make the end result a 5-2 win for the Tri-City Americans.
The Prince George Cougars (15-30-2-4) finished the game one-for-three on the power play, and remain six points back of Seattle in the race for eighth place in the Western Conference.
Next up, a weekend double-header with the Victoria Royals. Those games go Friday and Saturday at the CN Centre.

“…meet the new boss, same as the old boss…”
Good thing PG hockey fans “Won’t Get Fooled Again” and continue to stay home in droves!
Maybe if we could get a “Substitute” for the crappy GM, the wins that we “Seeker” would eventually come and fans could be “Happy Jack” again. Then the team could jump on their “Magic Bus” to some playoff success!
Alas, as long as lame Dallas holds the cards, one has to go back to “My Generation” to remember a Cougar team worth watching…and this current version will continue to be the “Who Are You?” of the Western Hockey League.
You didn’t seriously expect the kids to suddenly become talented due to a new coach did you? I can only hope that Holick can somehow convince the GM to do something useful.
ExPat your correct…. “The Kids Are Alright”…. it’s the GM that’s the problem.
Its embarassing. I watched that Road to the Memorial Cup show last night. Saskatoon is featured on that series because they are hosting the cup. The team travelled to PG for a game and the stands were empty. Of course, the Blades kicked the Cougar’s ass’. I feel sorry for this new coach. He can bust his hump and get these guys playing to their max ability but the team would still lose because the talent on the other teams are better.
Fire Thompson and hire a legitimate hockey person and get this team on a plan. The second that they fire Thompson, I will run down to the CN Centre and buy my seasons tickets again. Until that time, I won’t even accept a freebie ticket.
The other issue is that the average age of the fans currently going to the games has to be in the mid 70’s. If you jump up and cheer they look at you like your an idiot. They all just want to get together and have a nice 2.5 hour visit in some nice seats at an arena. Lord help a hockey game or a screaming fan interupt that.
I’m going on Friday night just to watch the kid’s team play during the first intermission. They always seem to have a blast!
I think O’Connor writes these press releases as well.
I think it’s the guy that takes care of the equipment that’s the problem. He’s got to go.
Love him or hate him the last time the Cougars were exciting is when Dempsey was coach and Peacock was in the line up.
editor has no sense of humor:
I take it we cannot mention:
The War
Brodsky / Thompson pre-nup
Dan O’Conner geting a raise.
I thought your post was good, Walrus. Didn’t see any reason to delete it.
