Prince George, BC – The College of New Caledonia’s Technical Trades Centre in Quesnel has been awarded the 2012 Governor General Medal in Architecture, as one of the top 12 architecture projects in Canada last year.
The $9.8-million dollar, 24-thousand square foot trades facility was jointly funded by the provincial and federal governments. It was finished in March of 2011 and is in the application process to attain LEED Gold certification.

"This award is like getting an Olympic Gold Medal in the architecture arena," says CNC’s Director of Facilities Services, Jim Hoyer. "One can’t get any higher an acknowledgement than this."
Steve McFarlane says, "We’re absolutely delighted that the building has received this award and truly honoured to share it with everyone involved in making this project a reality."
The trades centre was built by PCL Constructors Westcoast Inc and now houses approximately 250 trades students.

Nice to see that post modernism is on the way out and Bauhaus is is back in.
So what do we understand by “LEED Gold certification”? I think to most people it is meaningless jargon, just like “post modernism” and “Bauhaus”.
Tell us what goes on inside this building as far as people taking courses goes. As always, architectural photographs are about buildings as they relate to nothing rather than as they relate to people.
In this case there is one person we see. That is a start. One person looking at the cameraperson thinking “are you about done? I am starving. Let’s go!” …… ;-)
Gus, try not to be such a Philistine! Form follows function, and all that, dontcha know?
A very nice building, good architects, reputable builder … the Olympic award metaphor is a little over the top for an award given to 12 Canadian recepients out of the handful of candidates that apply for them …
… as to the Leeds Gold standard, that is like a voluntary building code that looks at different aspects of the building beyond safety; issues like the environmental footprint, energy use, usability, etc. The provincial building code sets out the minimum standard for safety. The Leeds code looks much beyond that.
The building was designed to meet the Leeds Gold standards and paid to be built to the Leeds Gold standard so it better be to Leeds Gold standards.
Maybe Krusty maybe
don’t know where the students are going to come from? The building has the poential to house 250 students but it will be interesting to see if they ever fill the classes.
according to the CNC website, CNC Quesnel is charging $3,314 for Electrical Foundations while CNC Prince George charges $2,387 for the same course. Check the Citizen for CNC Quesnel advertising trying to fill courses in Quesnel while there are wait lists in PG .. Quesnel for an extra grand as a student .. I don’t think so
so it would be nice if function follows form in this case .. maybe the building will bring in the students
I gather there’s more to it but this picture looks like every light commercial building from the 70s.
looks like 4 walls and a bit of glass,,,this is architecture?
3 1/2 year Electrical Trade Training

We are running an Education Business
Lots of glass and that is supposed to be energy efficient.
Willyj … no. It is engineering …. ;-)
I think if you were to look at British architecture of 40 years ago, you would find many examples of such buildings.
