Warning For Caregivers On ‘Safer Internet Day’
Prince George, BC – It may be midway through International Safer Internet Day, but parents and caregivers are being encouraged to maintain vigilance everyday…
With children and youth spending a large portion of their daily lives ‘connected’, the Canadian Centre for Child Protection’s Executive Director says, "We all have an important role to play in the online protection of children."
Lianna McDonald says, "We know that for parents and teachers, it can be hard to even know where to begin – and this is why, in partnership with the RCMP in BC, we want to make sure that Canadians are aware of the important educational resources that we offer to better protect children."
The BC RCMP recently released iSMART, an internet and social media resource tookit to support police officers in their work with parents and educators throughout the province. Deputy Commissioner, Craig Callens, says the resource is meant to help parents make sense of the challenges of raising children and youth in an ever-changing technological world.
The RCMP are also encouraging parents to visit The Door That’s Not Locked website, which contains age-specific internet safety information with online activities for kids.

One wonders how many hours and study groups were thrown against the wall to come up with this malarky. It was north of six figures to be sure. All of this time, effort and moolah just to catch the tail of the salamander. How many computer savvy kids do you know that would access this site? My best guess would hover around “0” (unless it was part of a scholastic curriculum). Ah well, someone was paid to do the job that good parents were already doing so it all works out in the end, right?
