For Some, The Steak Is Done
Prince George, BC – Mr. Jake’s Steakhouse has been a labour of love for the Maritsas family for the majority of the past 50-years, which is making for some difficult decisions while the longtime eatery is closed for renovations…
While the 3rd Avenue restaurant was first opened in 1966 by the Tsakumis family (still the building’s owners), Stamat Maritsas says his family has owned the restaurant for most of its 47-years. His parents, Alex and Nicke, took over in 1968 and ran it for the next 25-years. Since 2003, he and his brother, Alex Jr., have been putting their own Maritsas’ stamp on the place.
But Stamat Maritsas says a decision by the landlord to renovate is giving his family members time to reflect on what’s next. Maritsas says his brother is wanting to move on to other professional ventures, while his mom would like to see the family business carry on.
Chris Tsakumis told 250 News yesterday that the extent of the renovations have not yet been determined, but everything from a major cosmetic upgrade to a complete tear down of the building is being discussed (click here, for previous story)
Maritsas says he’s not willing to sign a long-term lease at this point, because the terms and conditions are unknown. Like the landlord, he says he’s hopeful everything can be ironed out over the next six-months to a year that the restaurant is closed.
Maritsas says he realizes that – as is the case with his own family – many in this community have special memories tied to Mr. Jake’s.
"Mr. Jake’s will open up again," he says. "I’m not sure if we’ll be back as the owners, but if not, I will help the new owners get the restaurant going again."

Running a restaurant is horribly hard. The hours are all day and all night, there’s always staff problemms, and in general people are hard to deal with.
Its normal to want out, especially if you are young and have options ahead of you.
I have been having the #3 for 20+ years.
52 days until the HST is EXTINGUISHED. Then many restaurants should start doing good again. I will certainly miss Jakes. I used to eat there regularly until we got HST. I was looking forward to going back there again but will just have to eat elsewhere. After the HST is EXTINGUISHED people might start eating out again. Personally I have not eaten in a BC restaurant since June 2010. Thanks gordo you LIAR. Soon the NDP will be running the show and your corporations are going to start paying again. Goodbye LIE-berals.
Recently, someone else got booted off of here because they were posting the same thing over and over. Just saying.
53 day till there is a new topic to rail against.
Be careful what you wish for, you may get it.

yes, but mattyc’s rants are far more entertaining.
Yea he drives to Alberta for a hamburger…really cost effective. Love the way you don’t support local establishments. Will you move away if the liberals manage to pull out a victory or just keep posting your usual dribble?
Does anyone else have a mental image of what MC must look like leaning over his computer, rubbing his hands together and counting down the days? LOL
Yea, wearing his tinfoil hat…
Some people are convinced that aliens exist. I believe that we have one of them amongst us! Just saying!!

He’s a confessed tax cheat; he doesn’t support anything, but I’m sure he expects all the perks that come from living in this country.
getting back to Mr. Jakes…..
We enjoyed eating there for years, especially liked the coleslaw/potato salad combination, with italian dressing (had to ask for it) They managed to keep their prices fairly reasonable too, imho.
metalman.
MattyC,
Maybe you could just move to Alberta, you seem to think everything there is so much better.
A while back matty mentioned he is retired and has more than enough money to last his life time. Guess he did OK under the liberals.
