BC Celebrates First Family Day

Monday, February 11, 2013 @ 4:20 AM
Prince George, B.C. – British Columbians are celebrating the first ever Family Day holiday today.

Last May, the provincial government declared the second Monday of February a statutory holiday in BC. Here in Prince George, City Hall is closed for the day although garbage collection is proceeding as usual in the College Heights area.

The Exploration Place is celebrating the holiday with a day of free admission and family-oriented activities running from 10 am to 4 pm. Four themed stations will allow visitors to take part in activities including face painting, storytelling and learning all kinds of information about the province.

As the city recognizes and celebrates our first ever Family Day, why would we still have workers out collecting garbage? I am sure the garbage can wait a day like it does for every other Stat holiday. I would like for our Mayor or a councilor to explain this.

I’m sure it will be studied then sent to committee for further review.

Would be nice to celebrate the first family day, but everyone in my family is working..

They made the schedule before the new holiday was approved. It’s easier to pay a few guys a day of overtime then trying to let everyone know the days have changed. There is no one media that will let everyone know. Unless they want to spend thousands on notices and either pay someone or mail them out to all.

Why would the goverment set BC Family day a week before Alberta’s. Wouldn’t it make sence to have the holidays on the same day!! I just shake my head.

Good grief. We finally get a February holiday and people still complain.

What an idiotic holiday. If I have to pay my staff to not work at least put it in a month where it’s nice enough to go out and enjoy it. They should name it BC Sleeps In & Watches Movies Day.

Seem’s like a nice enough day to go skiing, or sleddin’ or snow-shoeing or whatever your into. Or sitting at home whining at the computer.

Weaksauce, it’s a great holiday..breaks up the longest non-stat stretch we have. Poor you having to pay people for not working.. Just like every other business that has stat days off.. Didn’t you know that you had to pay for stats before you went into business? Seems like someone going into business would research this kind of thing. Hockey mom.. We aren’t Alberta.. We are BC.

Other Provinces, ie; Alberta, Sask, Man, Ont, and PEI, celebrate Feb 18th as a holiday this year. Or the 3rd Monday of February. We could have done the same and would have had some continuity, so why didnt we???

Seems they originally had this in mind and then changed their minds.

Having this holiday earlier in the year dovetails with the Chinese New Year which is usually between the end of January, and the middle of February. Perhaps that is part of their reasoning, because we do have over 1/2 million Chinese in BC, mostly in the greater Vancouver area.

Other than the Asian conncection, I dont see any reason as to why they would not, take the same day as the other 5 Provinces.

Where I grew up, in a similar climate, we had an entire week off from school in February so everybody could go skiing. So many people did it anyway that they figured it would be better if all the kids were out of school at once. What’s with this wimpy idea that you can’t do anything fun in February?

“Seems they originally had this in mind and then changed their minds.”

Do not worry … I predict it will be changed within 5 years to meet the others ….

Its my sons first birthday So I’m all good with this day off :)

Happy birthday to your son.

How old is he?

(~~~~l~~~x)(

“Whining at the computer?” More like just making observations. Right?

Apparently there was a website where you could vote or should I say poll what day the new holiday was going to fall on. The people of BC decided it should be on the second Monday of February.

The vote was last may. Apparently only 31000 voted for the second Monday.

Another day off with pay? I don’t recall having a say in this. How is it that the government can just arbitrarily announce another paid holiday without involving the stakeholders who are paying for it?

I don’t think the “people of BC who decided on this holiday” are responsible for paying for it.

You just do what you have to do, servant. Work the cost into the price of whatever it is you sell. If the public wants a paid holiday, the public pays for it. When the cost can’t be recovered in price, you go out of business. And the public eventually pays for that, too.

Servant… didnt you vote in the latest provincial election ? That is where you had your say. As socredible mentioned.. all costs of doing business is passed onto the consumers..
