BC Jobs Minister Pat Bell has been strangely quiet lately.
At the beginning of the backlash against HD Mining, their Chinese imported workers, and their phantom excuse of not finding local qualified coal miners for Tumbler Ridge, Mr. Bell was quite vocal in support of HD Mining. He was even suggesting they had done an “exhaustive” search and that the critisism was bordering on racist.
Now that the resumes have been released through court order, we find that not only did the local applicants have mining experience (some decades), there was a number of them that had actual underground coal mining experience.
I wonder why Mr. Bell is so reluctant to talk now?

Sure like the new street lights on Highway 16 across from Walmart. It would be nice if the province did the same thing to stretches of the Hart as well?
Also would be nice if BC Hydro went underground along highway 16 from Peden Hill to 97 and from 97 to 5th avenue along central. I think it would really make PG more inviting and help a lot in beautification of the city.

Any comments bout City workers collecting garbage in Blue zone on Monday and getting double time??? Not like first time anyone went without garbage pick up for a week.. Christmas holidays good example. Because the calendar was already made up before the Holiday was declared, they gotta work??? hmmm Expensive garbage..
Sure taking those guys long to put in the lights or whatever on hyway 16 past Wal Mart. Considering all the vehicles parked there and the manpower standing around, must be getting paid by the hour

There was a City crew patching a stretch of Foothills Blvd by the concrete plant. Wasn’t that road paved just last summer? If we are not getting even one year out of our asphalt re-surfacing, then we have to look at improving what we are doing.
On another note – 70% of respondents on this website’s poll do not want to pay anything for dumping garbage at the landfill. Yet, from what is posted every week in this forum, almost everybody bemoans the lack/deterioration of services in the city and regional district. We cannot have high service with low costs. Somewhere, the user has to pay, whether it be user-pay or higher overall taxes. When I left Victoria in 1976, the residents were paying a tipping fee to use the Hartland Rd dump. We are behind the times. We have been spoiled here with the lack of user fees.

“”Somewhere, the user has to pay, whether it be user-pay or higher overall taxes””
The problem with tipping fees are that some people will just dump where they don’t have to pay that user fee. In the long run it’s probably better to just have landfill costs included in the other taxes paid.

Don’t know if the temporary chinese coal mining situation is what is causing the problem or not. But the Feds have not issued Canadian temporary work visas since May 2012. The website keeps saying it’s going to open soon, in January it said it would be open by Feb 1/13 – still not open. It’s like we are flying by the seat of our pants and have no actual plan or policy. I have an overseas extended family member who is trying to come for a years work here, but not in a coal mine : – )

I saw a new BMO ad on TV last night, with a woman doing her banking on a smart-phone while walking down the street.
At the bottom of the screen it read “Closed set. Please obey all rules of the road.”
Really? We need fine print on a TV ad with somebody walking down the street? A sports car ad with the cars racing around, I can understand…. but walking?
Obviously there are too many lawyers if they’re concerned about that kind of litigation.

Asphalt crack on Domano…
You won’t find a stretch of road that doesn’t have cracks in the asphalt. These cracks are caused by good old mother earth moving around and by the freeze thaw cycles of our northern climate. These cracks will form where ever and when ever mother nature deems. The contractor is not resonsible for these repairs. Their warranty covers workmanship and material-neither of which is the cause of cracking.
The patching on Foothills near Rolling Mix Concrete are not in areas that were paved last year. Hopefully these areas will be part of the 2013 paving budget as it certainly is needed.
Just wanted to defend the contractor from being lambasted for something not in there control or responsibility.
….and in a matter of weeks the cold patchs that were placed yesterday will be just as bad as they were two days ago. Cold patch is a temporary solution but when it goes down on wet asphalt – temporary is too long a word.

The more we let go olf these issues thed more of a toehold they will have to get their own way. I didn’t think of that. Thanks.
Honny: “Computer went zonkers big time.”
It wasn’t the computer, you hit your refresh button (2 times) after you posted. A well known bug on the site.
“My pet peeve is seeing all those cars, sometimes a block long, idling in the Timmy’s and Starbuck’s drive thru amongst others. Why? Get your big butts out of the car and walk in to the place.”
I agree 100%. I was actually held up on victoria street because the lineup to timmies went around the block. Give me a break. Do you need crappy coffee so bad that you can hold up a major road (designated dangerous goods route I might add)
Yes to lazy to get out of there Car to walk to the coffee shop and sit down and enjoy it. It’s more a sign of the Time , all got yo be done on the run!
Stillsmokin go tell them how to do the job. I walk by there everyday and haven’t seen any standing around. Different machines for specific parts of the project. Have you swore at the flag persons yet.
P.G. such a great city, our anchor building down town will be the new R.C.M.P. building.LOL

We’ve known about this new holiday for more than a year…….don’t you think the garbage collection calendar was made up since then. Who’s mistake was it that is going to cost the tax payers?
Maybe they did not have time to hire a consultant to re do the garbage schedule in time for family day….
Maybe the garbage collectors had today off in lieu?
Does anyone else remember the holiday years ago on the third monday in February, it was called Heritage Day. Whatever happened to it? Or was it just a federal government holiday?
I makes a bit more sense on the third Monday than the second. Divides the winter up closer.
Pat Bell looks like Walter White.
I dont remember any Heritage Day in my lifetime in BC.
” the School Board is looking at shutting the schools for two weeks during the 2015 Winter Games.”
They are and I believe this will be the district’s March break. Teacher’s are on a contract. They do not get paid for breaks. CUPE members use vacation time or no pay.
Years ago the feds were trying to bring in another stat called Heritage day. At the time many union contracts were up for renewal and many of them had this new proposed stat put into their agreements. The feds never did complete their idea but many unions had it and have been enjoying it for years.
Now they get this new one too!
seamutt—- I was out enjoying the beautiful day we were given.. nawww didn’t see any flags hanging by yer house… My sorry :(
Schools out during the games?? Rumors has it they hoped the students would parttake in the events, guess as spectators. Gonna be hard on families, my guess..Child care not abundant around this town.
Thought teacher took smaller pay during the year so that they could collect an income during the summer.. At least I was told that by one teacher. Good idea.. EI certainly doesn’t pay people much. They are like Work Safe now, same rates.
Still smokin you are correct teachers have an option to take it for 12 months or take it for 10 months of the year.
Yaaahhnn! I sure wish Ben Miesner were back then we could have some real issues to discuss (ie)The northern gateway, those sleazy lieberals, the sale of BC rail. The more we let go olf these issues thed more of a toehold they will have to get their own way. Teachers aren’t given the consideration that they deserve and I believe that is due to the current lieberal government Cristy Clark is too buisy trying to buy her own government some undeserved creadibility.
Are we going to have the Friday free for all changed to the everyday free for all?
Perfect!
