2015 Canada Winter Games Host Society unveils plaque         photo submitted

Prince George, BC- Two years from today the Opening Ceremonies marking the start of the 2015 Canada Winter Games will be held in Prince George…

To mark the occasion, the Host Society has dedicated a ceremonial plaque to the citizens of Prince George that will be displayed near the welcome sign at the intersection of highways 16 and 97.

With approximately 15-thousand people – in the form of athletes, coaches, officials, medical staff, parents, volunteers, media and tourists – expected to visit the city over the course of the 18-day sporting and cultural event, 2015 CWG Board Chair, Anthony Everett, says, "It will be the people of Prince George who leave a lasting impression and help to tell the northern story to the rest of the country."

Also marking the countdown – the City, the Province, and the Canada Winter Games Council will launch countdown clocks on their websites, with the time ticking down from today’s 729 days.

Prince George Mayor Shari Green says 2015 will be a momentous year. "Not only will we be hosting the 25th edition of the Canada Games," says the mayor. "It is also the 100th anniversary of the City of Prince George, and the 25th anniversary of the University of Northern British Columbia. It will really be a year to remember and our year to shine."

A ‘Two Years ‘Til the Games’ Community Celebration is planned for this Friday evening between 5pm and 7pm in front of Canada Games House on Quebec Street, between 5th and 6th Avenue. The free event will feature food, activities, community performers and fireworks.

What are all these folks going to do for work in just two years?

Thanks for the notice , in just 2 years less a week I will go for a nice long vacation so I don’t have to walk down the street embarrassed at how we showcase our city to the rest of the country riddles with homeless and drug houses , potholes etc etc . Really wish our city put money to resolving these far more important issues first , then bring the games to a city we can all be proud of .

It’s not up to the city to resolve the “homeless and drug houses” issue; it’s society as a whole that bears that responsibility.

The city can however, do something about the bloody mess that is Prince George. It is one ugly city. Fix those potholes and clean up those ugly piles of dirt that line the streets. Don’t be afraid to buy a few cans of paint and spruce up some of the buildings downtown either.

What would it take to get CN to pretty up the rail yards on 1st Avenue? That’s the first thing people see when they drive in to town from the east. Perhaps a fence with a big ass mural painted by the city’s school kids?

etc., etc., etc.

Where can I park my car near 16 & 97 so I can get out and read the plaque? How about a countdown clock at city hall re: our municipal debt of “over” $111 million dollars? Over the door to the council chamber? I’d vote for that.

axman,

I have long lamented over the ugliness of the the CN site when arriving from the East. You may not be aware that CN planted a row of deciduous trees along that frontage either last year or the year before. It does nothing for the winter look but within a couple of years we will be enjoying a slightly better view than that of today.

Thanks CN – I’ve waited 39 years for this to happen.

Designate those ugly buildings on the north side of First Ave. as heritage and apply to Ottawa fer funding. Could happen. A coat of paint, a few shrubs and VOILA! A site to behold!

Well it sure would be nice have the winter games but we realy can ‘t afford them maybe when we manage to elect some physcally responsable people who don’t have the feeling of entitlement to the public purse.

Most of the old building on the North side of Ist Ave were removed last year, when the new tree’s were planted.

As far as the balance of old buildings, the only one left is the old CN Freight building, and I am not sure that CN even owns that buildings anymore.

So coming in on first avenue is not as bad as it used to be.

I agree that the freight building could do with a paint job.

Mayor Green is correct when she says that 2015 will be a momentous year.

She, and the present Councillors have a big job ahead of them to straighten out this City, by reducing spending, and holding the line on taxes, not to mention, road, snow removal, and infrastructure.

Some clarity on AAP, and Referendums, OCP,Haldi Road fiasco, Pine Valley Golf course fiasco.

They will have to win re-election in 2014, to be in office in 2015 to celebrate.

Whats their chances?????

It makes me angry to even hear about the winter games when we are paying millions of dollars a year just to service our huge debt.

The Mythbusters proved that you could polished up a hunk o’ crap. It was however still a hunk o’ crap.

Winter Games – another excuse for politicians to waste a colossal amount of money.

By then, our roads will be in such a state that any visitors to the city will go home with horror stories of trying to get around the city to the different events.

I’m hoping to see some of the games when they happen and maybe volunteer.

I know they are costing money, but it is nice to see our future olympians come to Prince George. I take great pride in knowing that Terry Fox once ran the streets of this city in his quest to fight cancer.

I’d rather spend money on building our future leaders than spend a ton of money trying to repair them and rehabilitate them as adults. Sports are a good diversion for kids and theere is a ton of research extolling the benefits of sports participation. I am one of the converted though as I take full advantage of the skating rinks, swimming pools, and walking trails in our city.

Glad you like sports Howrd.
If you like it so much, then why do you insist I pay for you to be able to have the facilities to play them?

I like fishing. Would you be willing to have a portion of your taxes go to purchase and maintenance of my boat?

You guys are all the same. As long as someone else is paying for what YOU want to do, it’s a great idea. But turn the tables, and it’s a totally different game, right?
