Prince George, B.C. – The province of British Columbia has announced a 2015 Canada Winter Games legacy grant.
At the celebration of the two year countdown to the games outside Canada Games House Friday night, Prince George-Valemount MLA Shirley Bond told those gathered that one of the dreams people in the north had for these games “was to ensure that there’s a legacy, and that we’re talking about more than just elite competition, but making sure that we have opportunities for young people and individuals to lead healthier lifestyles.” She says a group of leaders from all across the north came together in 2011 and said “we want to talk about a northern sports strategy. That has been led by Dr Anne Pousette. Anne and her team kept coming back to us and saying we need the games to be more than just a two week period.”
At that point Bond told Dr. Pousette and the crowd the government has looked at the plan and at the strategy “and tonight, on behalf of the government we are very delighted to bring a grant for $390,000 to begin the development of that northern sports strategy that is such an important part of the work you’ve been doing.” Bond says part of the grant program will be for First Nations and smaller communities to make applications for new sports equipment, for coaching development and to give kids the opportunity to try new things. She says it will be administered through Pacific Sport Northern BC.
