Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings rode the 5-point performance of their leading goal scorer, Cameron Lawson, to a 6-3 victory over the Langley Rivermen Friday night at the Coliseum.
Much like Thursday night’s game, which the Rivermen won by the same 6-3 score, this game was tighter than the final score indicates. In fact Langley outshot their hosts 42-36. The Spruce Kings led 2-0 after one on goals from Shayne Morrissey and Jace Hennig. They were up 3-zip after 40 minutes following Cameron Lawson’s first of the night. Then the goal fest came in the third. Langley got one at 1:36 but Lawson picked up his second at 4:01 on the power play. Langley got two more, at 4:38 and 12:10, to make it a 4-3 hockey game. But Morrissey scored his second of the night at 18:07 and Lawson capped off his hat trick with a shothanded goal, his 20th of the season, into an empty net at 19:20.
Lawson finished with 3 goals and two assists, Morrissey had his pair, Jace Hennig had a goal and a helper and four players, Mark Begert, Shylar Pacheco, Trevor Esau and Coltyne Hansen, all had two assists. The Spruce Kings scored two power play goals and one shorthanded, while Langley had one with the man advantage. The home club took 11 penalties, Langley 9.
It’s on the road for three games next weekend, Friday and Sunday in Coquitlam, with Chilliwack on the slate Saturday night. Then the Spruce Kings head back home for four to wrap up the regular season. One Prince George victory, or a Coquitlam loss, sews up a playoff berth for the Spruce Kings.
