Spring Start Expected on Burns Lake Hospital

Sunday, February 17, 2013 @ 6:12 AM
Prince George, B.C. – Planning work continues in preparation for the start of construction of the new Lakes District Hospital and Health Centre in Burns Lake this spring.

Site preparation work, which included the removal of existing building services, installing new water and sanitary sewer services and removal and relocation of the fencing around the property, was completed in December. As well, last August the existing nurses’ residence was relocated.

The process to select a design-build team is in the Request For Proposals stage, with the RFP closing this spring prior to the preferred proponent being selected. Total capital cost of the project is up to $55 million. The province and the Stuart Nechako Regional District will provide the funding.  Construction is expected to be completed by the summer of 2015.

The old Burns Lake Hospital, built in 1959, contained 13 beds.  The new facility, when complete will provide the following:

  • 16 beds
    • 13 Acute care beds
    • 1 isolation room
    • 1 palliative care room
    • 1 labour/delivery/recovery site;
  • Emergency services;
  • Diagnostic imaging;
  • A laboratory;
  • Provision for public health, mental health and addictions, and home and community care service, as well as local physician and emergency services;
  • Pharmacy;
  • Rehabilitation services;
  • Administrative offices;
  • Food services;
  • Logistical services; and
  • A procedure space will be included that will be large enough to provide future flexibility for the development of operating room space.

I thought they had already started on construction. I believe there was even a webcam set up.

If they are still in the design-build team selection phase and spring ends in the last half of June, I doubt anyone will be starting any construction after that, other than continuing with site prep.

Wonder how the WIC is doing with design-build team selection. The three proponents were to have their proposals in just prior to Xmas. It has been two months. Must be some tough decisions being made.

The story says site preparation was completed in December. Perhaps that was what the web cam was about.

They are now announcing the continuation of the project.

Going into an election you need all the **good news** announcements you can get.

I think the party in power should stop all projects at least one year ahead of election. Maybe even two years ….

I mean, they have taken all the fun out of these announcements because one used to be able to gauge when an election was about to be called by the intensity of the announcements.
