Stubbs Welcomes Community Safety Act

Friday, February 22, 2013 @ 4:06 AM
Prince George, B.C.- Prince George RCMP Detachment Superintendent Eric Stubbs welcomes news of the “Community Safety Act”.

The Provincial Government introduced the legislation yesterday, legislation aimed at clearing   properties that are chronic centres for criminal activity from neighbourhoods.

Superintendent Stubbs participated in the consultation for the development of the legislation, but has not yet seen the completed product. None the less, he says it will help. “We know there are certain properties with absent landlords, that are chronic sites for selling and use of drugs, or pawning stolen goods. They have heavy foot traffic and cause a great deal of collateral damage to the neighbourhood.”

While the legislation calls for a special unit to be developed to work with the owners of such properties, Superintendent Stubbs sees nothing but positive news in this strategy “We know that when we execute a search warrant and make arrests, the place could be up and running again in 24 hours, so it is advantageous to have more tools to end that cycle. Certainly we’re supportive of this initiative.”

Under the Community Safety Act, the new investigative unit  would be responsible for investigating, mediating and working with owners of properties to curb a number of dangerous activities taking place on those specific properties. Those dangerous activities include boot-legging,  Prostitution, drugs and  gang activity.

The Prince George detachment of the RCMP has already enacted an initiative that targets not only prolific offenders but those properties which have been repeated sites for criminal activity.

Mary Sjostrom, Mayor of Quesnel and president, Union of B.C. Municipalities says this is a positive move "Local governments have a limited range of tools to effectively deal with problem properties, so we asked the Province to look at the existing legislation. The Community Safety Act would provide local governments with an additional tool to respond directly to residents’ concerns – one that would be backed with additional powers to promote responsible property ownership and safe communities."

So bye bye all the clubhouses in PG? Good luck with that!

getting rid of the locations is just a small part of this cities problems. they will just move around a lot more and even move to the outskirts of the city.

a message has to be sent and reinforced to the criminal element that this city will not tolerate criminal activity.
punish the criminal so he does not want to reoffend.

boot camp and hard labour, not a nice rest in a provincial hotel, might change some young minds.
obviously what we got now isn’t working

just saying

Sheriff Joe Arpaio, where are you? Wish he’d bring his tent jail up here.

Sheriffs? It’s my understanding of them is that they chauffeur criminals to and fro court and seem to doze off while attending a trial. That’s my image and I’m sticking to it.

Myabe we need jail wardens to have a little freer hand in how they run their institutions.
