Avalanche Danger Climbs Across BC

Saturday, March 2, 2013 @ 4:53 AM
Prince George, B.C. – A warning is going out to all who use the backcountry of British Columbia for recreational purposes.

The Canadian Avalanche Centre says the avalanche danger rating is high throughout the province, with conditions that are perfect for major snow slides. A blast of warm, moist air and torrential rain, known as a Pineapple Express, hit the south coast on Friday pushing the avalanche danger to extreme in alpine areas of the Sea-to-Sky region as well as the South and North Columbias.

Backcountry ski companies have noted dramatic increases in the number of skiers and boarders heading out into the wilderness. However some of the newcomers are inexperienced when it comes to keeping track of their location, knowing what to do if they get lost or injured and being able to avoid conditions which may trigger an avalanche.

The avalanche centre says right now is the most dangerous time of the year for avalanches in BC.
