Prince George, B.C. – The Prince George Spruce Kings will have to dig deep to hold onto third place in the BC Hockey League’s Mainland Division.
The Kings kicked off a four-game, regular season-ending home stand with a 5-4 double overtime loss to the Vernon Vipers at the Coliseum Friday night. Vernon held a 2-1 lead after one, and the Kings outscored the Vipers 3-2 in the second to make it 4-4 after 40 minutes. No scoring in the third stanza or the first 5-minute overtime frame. And it looked like it might go into the books as a tie. But Brendan Persley, on a three-on-one break, notched his second goal of the game at the 4:23 mark of the second overtime to give Vernon the win and keep their slim playoff hopes alive in the bottom of the Interior Division.
Prince George marksmen were Justin Rai, Shayne Morrissey, Lyndon Martell and Jace Hennig. The game was a clean one with five minors handed out to the Vipers, one to the Spruce Kings. Prince George held a 37-33 edge in shots on goal.
So the Kings pick up a single point for 57 on the season. Meantime the fourth-place Langley Rivermen edged Chilliwack 4-3 and now have 52 points, plus they hold a game in hand on the Spruce Kings. It sets up a great two-game set between the Kings and Rivermen Saturday night at 7 and Sunday afternoon at 3 at the Coliseum.
The Spruce Kings close out the regular season next Saturday when they host Salmon Arm.
