Americans Double Cougars 6-3.
The Prince George Cougars dropped the first of a Monday-Tuesday double-header to the Tri-City Americans on Monday at the CN Centre. Connor Rankin scored two goals and Troy Trombley made 34 saves in a 6-3 victory for the Tri-City Americans. Marc McNulty, Brett Roulston and Jari Erricson responded for Prince George offensively.
Early in the first the Cougars drew first blood when Marc McNulty raced the puck up ice from his own zone. McNulty got all the way to the side of the net, and his centering attempt deflected off of Troy Trombley and in for his eighth of the season. Goaltender Brett Zarowny picked up the lone assist.
Moments later Tri-City countered with a power play goal of their own. Justin Feser found a loose puck in the slot, and was able to flip it over top of Zarowny’s glove and in for his 41st.
36 seconds later Connor Rankin scored his first of two on the night. Rankin found a loose puck beside Brett Zarowny’s right pad, and knocked it into the open net. 30 seconds later Mitch Topping scored from the left point, and all of a sudden the Americans had a 3-1 lead that took a minute and six seconds to create.
Late in the period the Cougars got one back when Chase Witala and Brett Roulston combined on a two-on-one rush. Roulston tipped home Witala’s pass from the left wing for his eighth of the season, and the Cougars skated into the locker room down 3-2.
Early in the second the Cougars had a marvelous chance to tie it, but Troy Bourke was robbed by the glove of Troy Trombley.
Lucas Nickles extended Tri-City’s lead to 4-2 when he skated down the right wing and roofed one over the glove of Brett Zarowny for his ninth of the season. Connor Rankin then added one just a minute later off a rebound to make it 5-2 after two.
Early in the third the Cougars got back within two goals when Jari Erricson converted off a rebound from the left point. Raymond Grewal and Jordan Tkatch assisted on Erricson’s 12th of the season.
The game’s final goal came just over two minutes later when Beau McCue was able to force a defensive turnover and beat Brett Zarowny for his 17th of the season.
Prince George outshot Tri-City 37-33, but were unable to beat Troy Trombley more than three times. Trombley made several strong stops, including two beauties off of Cougars prospect Jansen Harkins, who would eventually be named the game’s third star for his strong efforts.
Tri-City went one-for-two on the power play while the Cougars finished one-for-six.
Prince George now sits at 18-38-2-6 this season and are still eight points back of eighth place with only eight games remaining in their season. These teams will meet again Tuesday night at the CN Centre.

tonite was the beginning of the end of the season.. or maybe it was just a rerun… the coach knows we are hooped as he leaves in Zarowny after allowing 3 goals on the first 6 shots…i must have missed the announced attendance, which would have been an ALLTIME LOW…the kiss cam was not shown in the media break, probably due to the fact there were hardly any fans , let alone couples there….our best forward was a 15 year old call up who will learn what “give up” means as the once numerous fans have…i know i sound like a jaded fan because that is what i have become… are you.dear reader, approaching the same state of Cougardom or Cougars DONE ??
How much longer are we having to endure Thompson, do you not get it Mr Brodsky or are you trying to force your will on the people. As long as Thompson is there the team WILL fail and the fans WILL stay away.
This will be the last year of Mr. Thompson’s reign. You can quote me on that.
Boxscore Sheet reads attendance at 1382. That’s pretty bad even for a weekday game.
15 years ago they were averaging 5825 per game, and have been losing fans every year since (except for 2010-11 when they gained an avg. of 42… whoop whoop!).
Seven years remain in their contract with the City. Something has got to change because no business can continue to bleed like this.
I wish I could have quoted you on that 7 years ago, axman. Nepotism has completely destroyed this franchise and its fan base.
axman: “This will be the last year of Mr. Thompson’s reign. You can quote me on that.”
I have been saying that the last couple seasons, but I think it has to finally happen this season. It is unbelievable that Dallas Thompson still has a job considering how long the team has been bad.
The Attendance was 1382 last night? Geez, a few more nights of this and the average attendance of the Spruce Kings and Cougars will be almost equal. The Cougars are a national joke, the 1 franchise in the WHL that hasnt had a winning season since artifical ice was invented it seems.
There has to be something done, whether its with Brodsky or Thompson. Nobody is going to shell out $20/night to see substandard hockey played by the home team.
In the BCHL message post, there was rumours that Brodsky was trying to move to Nanaimo. The overwhelming view was that Nanaimo should not be excited by this as Thompson, as a talent scout, could not pick a human out of a tribe of chimps
LOL, I like the social media prompt at the top of the article: “Be the first of your friends to recommend this”. Ummm, no.
I’d rather recommend my friends staple baloney to their face and swish their heads around in a piranha tank then endure 120 minutes of the Dallas Thompson show.
Dallas Thompson has seen six coaches come and go in his reign. At some point, we have to stop blaming coaching.
