Cougars Fall 5-3 in Vancouver.
Sunday afternoon in Vancouver the Prince George Cougars fell 5-3 to the Vancouver Giants. Cain Franson had a goal and three helpers for Vancouver while Colin Jacobs responded with a three-point game for Prince George.
Vancouver led 2-0 after one due to goals from Thomas Foster and Jackson Houck. Foster’s goal game at 6:33 off a rebound, and just under three minutes later Jackson Houck converted off a two-on-one rush with Taylor Vickerman.
The Cougars responded well in the second period by drawing a number of penalties. Just past the halfway point they were rewarded on the power play when Zack Pochiro blasted a point-shot that deflected in off of Giants captain Wes Vannieuwenhuizen and in for his 15th. Colin Jacobs and Chase Witala assisted Pochiro’s goal.
1:13 later Jordan Tkatch tied it on a breakaway, which was set up nicely by Colin Jacobs. Tkatch’s sixth had the game tied 2-2, but the Cougars lead wouldn’t last long.
Cain Franson restored the Giants lead with a backhand goal from the side of the net. Franson’s 29th of the season was scored on a power play, and the Giants took a 3-2 lead into the third.
Late in the second Vancouver’s Scott Cooke was ejected from the game after he received a five-minute boarding penalty for hitting Chase Witala near the Cougars bench. The cougars received a five-minute major power play and took full advantage early in the third.
36 seconds into the third Colin Jacobs notched his 24th goal to once again tie the score, but once again the lead wouldn’t last long.
Dalton Sward beat Mac Engel from the right wing hash marks at 3:08 on a knuckler to give Vancouver their third lead of the hockey game.
Dan Gibb nearly tied the game on the next shift, but rang his point shot off of the crossbar.
A few moments later Jason Trott clinched the victory for Vancouver when he fired home a pass from Cain Franson in the slot.
Vancouver outshot the Cougars 31-29 and went one-for-one on the power play. The Cougars went two-for-five on their power play chances.
With the loss on Sunday the Cougars (21-39-2-6) still trail Everett by four points for eighth place but still hold one game in hand. The Cougars will play their next game in hand on Tuesday night in Spokane.
