Officers From IIO Investigating Vanderhoof Crash
Prince George, BC – A team of six officers from the Independent Investigations Office has been deployed to Vanderhoof to investigate an early morning crash in the community.
North District RCMP say they will not be providing any details surrounding the incident because the IIO is now involved.
A news release from the Independent Investigations Office says an RCMP officer in Vanderhoof observed a vehicle ‘stunting’ in a parking lot in that community at 4:20am this morning. The vehicle left the scene and was reportedly not pursued by the officer, but the officer came upon the vehicle a short distance away and discovered it had struck a signpost.
Police have informed the IIO that the officer spoke briefly with the driver, who then fled the scene when the officer checked on the passengers. Three people were transported to hospital, two with serious injuries.
IIO spokesperson, Owen Court, says the office was notified of the incident at 6:35am this morning. The team of investigators, including a forensic specialist, are set to arrive in the community this afternoon. Court says they’ll meet with the RCMP liaison officer and initiate an investigation.
Court says, in this case, the RCMP will remain responsible for any concurrent investigation involving the actions of the driver of the vehicle or the affected persons.
Highway 16 remains closed in Vanderhoof at 1st Street, with a detour available via 2nd Street. The route is tentatively scheduled to re-open at 7pm (revised as of 2:30pm).
This is the second IIO investigation to be launched in the region in the past three days, with investigators called into Prince George after a suspect was injured in a fall during a police foot pursuit on Friday.

Seriously?!? Both of these incidents require an outside investigation?? This IIO buiness has gone way too far, and what a waste of taxpayers dollars! I can just see the scenario…..
Police officer: Stop there! I have just witnessed you breaking the law!
Criminal: So you have sir! But I am now going to walk to that get away vehicle, do not follow me or try to arrest me, as I may fall and hurt myself. I will then speed away in that possibly stolen car, but do not persue, because you will be in BIG heap trouble if I happen to bump into a light pole and dent that car or hurt myself! Then you will have to be on a paid leave until the IIO has comleted its investigation of your actions. As a Canadian criminal, I know my rights!
RIDICULOUS!!!!
Neat scenario …… so I wonder what really happened. We might find out a bit within a few days … and the whole story …. maybe never.
Qtown, well said!
Might find out ? or not, what happened to the investigation of that army vet that got shot outside Prince george, never heared anything about it, or did I mis it
People from nearby say it was a truck not a car. As to why the IIO is involved, one possibility is that the officer may have been negligent in not stopping the vehicle. Another is that perhaps the officer did pursue it and the crash occurred in the course of the pursuit.
A RCMP officer observed a vehicle ” stunting” @ 4:20 am in the parking lot and did not pursue ??? My question is ” what on earth have we got a police force for? A person doing donuts in the parking lot is probley drunk..won’t ya think…DUH
Black Chevy (or GMC) crew cab pickup destroyed after hitting a power pole and large sign post in the parking lot of Glens Motor Inn. It hit HARD, there were chunks of the truck 50 plus feet ahead of the scene.
There were skid marks on the pavement quite a ways from the pole heading strait for it. The truck was going at a very high rate of speed. its a wonder anybody lived. I guess air bags did their job. I would suspect the engine is sitting 3 to 4 feet back in the truck as it struck dead on in the middle of the grill.
adios@Yes, somebody stunting like that should be looked into, but I can imagine the officer deciding that pursuing him might spook him and cause an accident. Maybe the officer called in for other units to box him in or set up a roadblock.
Pick any day or time you want. There is always someone stunting in the CN Parking lot and no one gives a crap, let someone get hurt and the cops are the blame. Do you know what your kids are up to with your vehicle?
The CN parking lot is also a good place to train novice drivers. Teaching the defensive technique is not always stunting. But there’s alot of teens horsing around. I rather them find an empty parking lot instead of neighborhood streets
