Prince George, B.C. – Although Social Work Week wrapped up on the weekend, it is never too late to congratulate those who are given special recognition for their efforts.
The recipient of the Bridget Moran Advancement of Social Work in Northern Communities Award this year, is UNBC Social Work Professor and community activist, Dr. Si Transken.
She was chosen for her contributions to social justice and she is well known for her work to give voice to women through art, poetry and creativity – “artivism”. She was chosen as the one whose work and life reflect Bridget’s activism and determination to build a better, more equitable society.
The annual presentation of this award provides pause to remember Bridget Moran and her work. A tireless northern social work activist, she was fired from her job in the 1960s for speaking out against the provincial government’s lack of appropriate social services for children and families and became a well-known author with books such as Little Rebellions and Stoney Creek Woman. Bridget passed away in 1999, she is immortalized in a statue on 3rd Avenue, sitting on a park bench, as if in conversation with the person who would take the vacant seat next to her.
